Leroy “Roy” Frei
LeRoy “Roy” Frei, age 79, of Camp Douglas, WI, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at Tomah Memorial Hospital. He was born June 23, 1930, to Walter and Odessa (Thompson) Frei in the Town of Byron, Monroe County, WI. Roy served in the United States Army and was injured in Guam.
He was united in marriage to Irene Lee on Feb. 23, 1952. Roy started his career in farming and then worked for American Motors in Kenosha. He started a company, Frei and Sons, landscaping and trucking. He later expanded the company to sell and install above-ground swimming pools in the summer and sell artificial Christmas trees in the winter. In 1986 he retired and moved back to Camp Douglas.
Roy was a member of the First Baptist Church in New Lisbon and also the Tomah American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans and the Operators Union Local #139. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune, car shopping, playing accordion, riding bike, landscaping, gardening, swimming, bluff climbing and roller-skating, which he did until the age of 75. Roy loved traveling and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Irene; his children, Tom (Melanie) Frei of La Crosse, Ken (Mary) Frei of Richardson, TX, Ron (Diana) Frei of Kennesaw, GA, and Sandi (Duane) Hill of Onalaska; a brother, Leon (Margie) Frei of San Juan, TX; a sister, Betty Frei of Sparta; grandchildren, Jonathan (Gaby) Frei, Eric Frei and Kelly Frei, Katherine (Jake) Lewis and Rebecca (Logan) Wells, Kim (Greg) Emmerich, Diana Leystra and Tiffany Leystra; one great-grandson, Matthew Frei; five step-grandchildren, Jim Pritchard and Dan Pritchard, Christy (Ben) Bowman, Melissa (Paul) Genner, Marisa (Nabil) Kaali; an aunt, Alice Frei; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Odessa, and a son-in-law, Steve Leystra.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 6, at 12 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in New Lisbon. Pastor Delbert Oatsvall officiated. Burial followed in the Oakdale Cemetery, Oakdale. Family and friends called Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to the First Baptist Church. The Torkelson Funeral Home of Tomah assisted the family with arrangements.
