Arlene L. Lottmann
Arlene Louise (Knowles) Lottmann, age 82, of Sparta, WI, passed away Dec. 28, 2009, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospice in La Crosse. She was born Feb. 14, 1927, to James and Lena Knowles. She grew up on the farm where she was born near Hillman, MN. She graduated from Onamia High School in 1944 and attended 9 months of teacher’s training in St. Cloud, MN. She taught in rural schools in Dutton, MT, and in Raymond, Hillman, and Swatera, MN.
While teaching in Raymond, she met her husband, Edwin Lottmann. They were married on Aug. 8, 1947, and farmed in the Raymond and Hillman areas until 1963. When her husband went into the insurance business in 1963, she managed the office in their home until they retired in 1990.
In 1968, they relocated from Hillman to Aitkin, MN, where they lived on Little Pine Lake for 25 years. One of Arlene’s favorite things about living on the lake was watching and listening to the loons. In 1993, due to her husband’s heart condition, they moved to Ocala, FL. Five years after her husband died in 1999, Arlene returned to the Midwest and lived in Sparta and Warrens, where she enjoyed the changing of the seasons and the wildlife, and the move also brought her closer to her family.
Wherever Arlene lived, she was very active in the Lutheran church, teaching Sunday School and VBS; leading Bible studies and women’s groups; singing solos, duets, and in the choir; serving on many different committees; and organizing libraries. She and her husband also supported many missionaries and traveled to Kenya and Africa, twice to visit missionary friends they had supported for many years.
Arlene and her husband raised five children and took in an additional family of five in 1969. She enjoyed attending her children’s and grandchildren’s sports activities, plays and musicals, band and choir performances. Her hobbies included sewing, gardening, reading, and arts and crafts.
Arlene is survived by: daughter Judy (Keith) Potter, aka Dr. Judy Lottmann of Warrens, and son Matt Lindborg; daughter Kathy (Mario Arriola) Lottmann of Oregon City, OR; daughter Patricia (Kevin) Gorman of Lake Villa, IL, and children Emily, Rachel and Mitchell; son Alan (Sharrill) Lottmann of Blairsville, GA; and four adopted children. She is also survived by granddaughters Alicia and Sarah and grandson Brian and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin; daughter, Sandra; and a son, David Edwin.
