Nettie C. Doers

Nettie C. Doers, age 85, of Tomah, passed away Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, at the Pine View Care Center in Black River Falls. She was born May 20, 1924, to Horace and Cecelia (Sczigethy) Garvin in Tampa, FL. She graduated from high school in Brooklyn, NY. She was proud to have served in the United States Army. She was united in marriage to Richard Doers.

Nettie spent her working years as an Administrative Officer at Fort McCoy. She was a faithful member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Warrens. She was also a member of the Tomah American Legion Post #201. Nettie enjoyed doing puzzles, painting, ceramics and playing cards. Most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Arlene (Duane) Hanson of Eau Claire, Carol (Gary) Nemitz of Warrens and Evelyn (Richard) Delaney of Warrens; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Cecelia; twin sons, Richard Albert Doers Jr. and Michael Allen Doers; brothers, Horace H. Garvin Jr. and Clifford J. Garvin; and a sister, Evelyn.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Dec. 21, at 10 a.m. at the Torkelson Funeral Home in Tomah. The Very Rev. Steven J. Kachel will officiate. Burial will follow in the Warren Mills Cemetery, Warrens. Family and friends are invited for visitation on Sunday, Dec. 20, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Torkelson Funeral Home in Tomah. Family and friends are also invited for visitation on Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Edwin E. Lawrenz

Edwin E. “Eddie” Lawrenz, 89, of Tomah, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. He was born March 22, 1920, to Herman and Ida (Remus) Lawrenz in Oakdale, WI. He was baptized into the Christian faith on May 16, 1920, in the Township of Oakdale. He was confirmed at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tomah on June 4, 1933. He was a member of the Tomah High School Graduating Class of 1937. He proudly served his country as United States Naval Fireman First Class on the USS South Dakota during World War II, receiving the Victory Medal, American Area Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon 4 stars and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He was united in marriage to Lydia Hahn on June 30, 1940. She preceded him in death in 1990. He was then united in marriage to Laura Eddy-Anderson on June 12, 1993, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tomah. He worked for many years as an insurance agent for Thrivent Insurance Company. He was a faithful and devoted member of the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tomah, serving as past president of the Church Council, a longtime church elder overseeing Property Manager, and a member of the St. Paul Men’s Club. He was an active member of the Tomah community, serving on the Monroe County Fair and Tractor Pull committees. Eddie was also a member of the Grassman-Sowle-Larsen-Senz American Legion Post # 201. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending afternoons fishing with friends. He will be remembered for his friendly smile and his witty joke telling.

He is survived by his loving wife, Laura; a son, James (Heidi) Lawrenz of Vacaville, CA; two stepchildren, Jeffery (Lori) Anderson of Sun Prairie and Janelle (Thomas) Faulkner of Tomah; five grandchildren, Danielle (Matt) Faber of Winona, MN, Nicole (Ben) Ryner of Sun Prairie, Evan Anderson of Sun Prairie and Kyle and Kevin Faulkner, both of Tomah; one great-grandchild, Sophia Faber, and soon to be great-grandchild baby Ryner; four sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death his first wife, Lydia; a son, Larry; three brothers, one sister, and four brothers-in-law.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 17, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church, 525 Superior Ave. Pastor Curt S. Backhaus will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery with military honors.

Relatives and friends were invited to call today (Thursday) at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. The Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
