Robert L. Friedl
Robert L. Friedl, 85, of Tomah, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009. He was born May 5, 1924, in Elroy, to Charles and Florence (Parker) Friedl. He was a WWII Marine Corps veteran with the 1st Marine Division and fought in the Pacific theater from January 1943 to January 1946. Some of the places he fought or served include Peleliu, Papua New Guinea, Guadalcanal, Goodenough Island, New Britain, Okinawa, Australia, and China.
He was united in marriage to Agnes Schaller on Aug. 17, 1946. She preceded him in death on July 31, 2005. Bob worked for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad for 35 years and retired in 1984. He was a member of the Grassman-Sowle-Larsen-Senz American Legion Post #201 at Tomah.
He is survived by his six children: Robert J. (Nancy) of Port Isabel, TX, Daniel (Lucy) of New Lisbon, Michelle (Bob Lachman) Clay of Tomah, Thane (Nancy) of Oregon, Kristine and Anthony, both of Tomah; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hazel (Harry) Imhoff of Madison and Bertha (Virgil) Fowler of Tomah; one brother, James (Virginia) of Tomah; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Agnes; his parents; two sisters, Edna (Duane) Miller and Margaret (Forest) Johnson, and five brothers, Floyd (Dorothy), Gifford (Lucille), John (Mildred), Russell (Anne) and Norman (Betty).
A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, 801 E. Monowau St., Tomah. The Very Rev. Steven J. Kachel officiated. Burial was in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Mather, with military honors by the Grassman-Sowle-Larsen-Senz American Legion Post#201.
Relatives and friends called at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
Sheldon A. Quist
Sheldon A. Quist, age 78, of Clifton, WI, died Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009, at the Tomah VA Medical Center. He was born Aug. 18, 1931, to Arthur and Lucele (Stoiber) Quist in the Township of Clifton, WI.
He was drafted into the military in 1951 at the age of 20, and he served as a small arms repairman/mail clerk for two years before he was discharged as Cpl.
He was united in marriage to Marjorie Connor, June 23, 1956, at St. James Catholic Church in Camp Douglas.
Sheldon wore many hats in his career, a butter maker, welder, mason, carpenter, locksmith and a farmer. He joined the VA Engineering Department as a carpenter and retired as the Supervisor of Maintenance and Repair in 1991. In his spare time, Sheldon had many hobbies, hunting, fishing, especially mayfly fishing, maple syrup making, gardening, woodworking, coaching slow pitch softball, playing cards, mushroom hunting, dancing, shooting pool and playing Bumble Bee with the grandchildren.
He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church at Indian Creek, the Knights of Columbus, National Rifle Association, Camp Douglas American Legion Post #133 and the Clifton Sportsman’s Club.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; his children, Karla Quist (friend, Dale Benson), Joseph (Susan) Quist, Kathleen (Quist) Cook (friend, Bill Johnson), Kevin (Julie) Quist, Donna (Mark) Rezin and Kristi (Rob) Carlson; 15 grandchildren, Todd (Rhonda) Cook, Lorri Cook (friend, Bob Stelter), Melinda Cook, Merideth Quist, Heidi (Andy) Graff, Sarah Quist, Mitchell, Leah and Jacob Rezin, Joshua, Cassandra, Hope and Katrina Carlson, Amelia and Madeline Quist; four great-grandchildren, Sierra and Krista Cook, Dillon Stelter and Aidan Koll; a brother, Norel (Marleen) Quist; three sisters, Audrey (Richard) Abbs, Maxine Franz and Donna Kreger; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Lucele; his brothers, Franklin and Korwin; brothers-in-law, Bill Kreger and Howard Franz, and sister-in-law, Darlene Quist.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 5, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Indian Creek. Father Jon Ofori-Domah officiated. Burial followed in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery. Family and friends called on Friday, Dec. 4, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Torkelson Funeral Home in Tomah and Saturday from 10a.m. until the time of service at the church.
The Torkelson Funeral Home of Tomah assisted the family with arrangements.
