Two Veterans will be honored at the Tomah VA Medical Center (VAMC) on Tuesday, Nov. 10 during the annual Veterans Day ceremony at 1 p.m. in the VA Chapel.

The public is invited to attend. World War II Veterans Steve Pappas, Adams-Friendship, and Robert M. Witzig, Fennimore, will be inducted into the “Hall of Heroes” and were selected from 10 nominations reviewed for induction.

D-Day Veteran Steve Pappas landed on Utah Beach at 0600 hours on June 6, 1944, with Company L of the 359th Infantry Regiment, part of the largest invasion force in history. It was also his 19th birthday. Pappas fought throughout the battle of France ,where he received a Bronze Star with “V” device for saving the life of a wounded officer from a burning tank. On Nov. 9, 1944, he was wounded and captured after refusing to leave his other injured comrades and became a German prisoner of war. Pappas was liberated on March 27, 1945.

His other medals include the Purple Heart, POW medal, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantryman’s Badge and the World War II Victory medal.

USS Indianapolis survivor Robert M. Witzig entered the United States Navy on Jan. 13, 1944. He fought in seven of the 10 battles the “Indy” engaged in to include Iwo Jima and Okinawa. A few minutes after midnight on July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-58 and sank into the Phillipine sea in just 12 minutes, taking 297 men with her.
