The Tomah High School freshman football team finished the season with a 4-2 record after defeating Sparta, 34-6, and losing to Holmen, 28-26, in a pair of contests played at Tomah’s E.J. McKean Field.
Sparta stayed close before the Timberwolves busted the game open in the second quarter. Tomah scored first when Jacob Dubord scored on a 22-yard run (the two-point conversion failed), but Sparta tied the game at 6-6 on a 34-yard touchdown pass.
Tomah regained the lead early in the second quarter on Byron Neal’s 16-yard touchdown run. Dubord then busted loose for an 81-yard run that gave the Timberwolves an 18-6 lead at halftime.
The Timberwolves started the second half with an eight-minute scoring drive, capped by Neal’s three-yard touchdown run. Alex Thompson passed to Denver Green for the two-point conversion that pushed Tomah’s advantage to 26-8.
Tomah scored its final touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 17-yard run by Thompson. Neal added the two-point conversion run.
Green led the defense by intercepting a Spartans’ pass.
Against Holmen, Tomah saw an 18-0 first quarter lead disappear. The Timberwolves took the early lead on a five-yard run by Dubord, a 25-yard run by Kyle Whaley and a 40-yard interception return by Whaley.
Tomah failed on all three two-point conversion attempts, something that would haunt the Timberwolves later.
Holmen rallied to take a 20-18 halftime lead and stretched the advantage to 28-18 on a touchdown and two-point conversion in the third quarter.
The Vikings were aided two 15-yard Tomah penalties, two fumbles and a punt blocked which changed field position and swung momentum in Holmen’s favor. Two of Holmen’s scoring drives started on the Tomah one-yard line and 11-yard line.
Tomah got close in the fourth quarter after a 90-yard interception return by Garrett Serna and a safety, but the Timberwolves couldn’t produce the winning score.
The freshman team was coached by Allan (Chip) Thompson, Josh Kinsman and Greg Grovesteen.
