Tomah soccer still searching for first win
The Tomah High School boys soccer team has scored its first goal.
The Timberwolves, however, are still searching for their first win.
Tomah posted a 0-2-1 record at the New Berlin Eisenhower Invitational Friday and Saturday before battling to a scoreless tie at La Crosse Central in a Mississippi Valley Conference matchup Tuesday.
The results left Tomah with a 0-5-2 record.
Timberwolves’ coach Scott Conzemius said the trip to New Berlin was a positive one for his team.
“The tournament was a great learning experience,” Conzemius said. “We were able to play three very good teams from the eastern side of the state and earn the opportunity to learn and grow as a team.”
Greg Gerke scored Tomah’s first goal of the season in a 1-1 tie Saturday against New Berlin Eisenhower. The goal was assisted by Cory White.
Tomah’s other results were a 4-0 loss to Milwaukee Tech/Milwaukee Bradley and a 7-0 loss to Hartford. The Hartford match was Tomah’s fourth in a 48-hour span.
The tournament’s final standings: Hartford 3-0, Eisenhower 1-1-1, Tech/Bradley 1-2-0, Tomah 0-2-1.
At La Crosse, Tomah had scoring opportunities but couldn’t get any of its seven shots past Central goalkeeper Sawyer Smith.
Tomah goalkeeper Jared Dietzman earned his first shutout of the season with 11 saves.
Conzemius said improving the offense is a team effort.
“We’re not passing the ball well, and we’re not getting the ball through the middle of the field,” he said. “If you can’t pass the ball, you can’t sustain any offense. It’s a work in progress, and we’re improving.”
