Ellard V. Doescher, James A. Hartung, Raymond Monroe Jr., Galen Sheridan

Ellard V. Doescher

Ellard V. Doescher, 91, of Tomah, died Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Tomah. He was born June 14, 1918, to Charles and Hannah (Hanson) Doescher. He was confirmed into the Christian faith on July 29, 1934, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Rozellville, WI. He was a U.S. Army veteran proudly serving during WWII. He worked for various farmers in the area. He enjoyed gardening, especially growing tomatoes. He was a faithful member of the Ambassador Baptist Church for several years.

He is survived by three brothers, Harold of Wisconsin Rapids, Leroy (Marlene) of Junction City and Ronald (Marcia) of Wisconsin Rapids; two sisters, Janet Marmsolar of Eau Claire and Janice Thomas of Wisconsin Rapids; three sisters-in-law, Delores Doescher of Wisconsin Rapids, Betty Doescher of Nekoosa and Iola Doescher of Wausau, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a step-mother, Rose (Tessmer) Doescher; five brothers and four sisters, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, Aug. 28, at 10:30 a.m. at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home. Pastor Clyde Ewers will officiate.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

Burial will be Friday, Aug. 28, at 3 p.m. in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, 611 St. Joseph’s Ave., Marshfield, with military honors.

The family requests that memorials in Ellard’s name be given to the Ambassador Baptist Church.

James A. Hartung

MENOMONIE - James A. Hartung, age 86, of Menomonie, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday Aug. 24, 2009.

Jim was born on April 18, 1923, in Eau Galle. He was the son of Edward and Maude (Weinzirl) Hartung. Jim married Carol Gasteyer on Sept. 25, 1945, in Eau Galle. He farmed for many years in the Eau Galle area before moving to Menomonie. Jim worked for more than 30 years selling farm equipment for Badger Northland and retired in 1986. Jim spent his early retirement years as an active member in local politics, serving proudly as a member of the Menomonie City Council, Dunn County Board of Supervisors and many sub-committees especially Land Conservation and the Dunn County Fair Board. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed deer and turkey hunting, fishing, gardening, travel, practical jokes and playing cards. Of all the success that he had attained in his long life, Jim was most proud of his family and all they had accomplished.

Jim is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carol, and his nine children: Mary (Jerry) Benson of Woodbury, MN, Ruth (Mike) Kasten of Rosemount, MN, Jim (Dawn), Mike, both of Elmwood, Kathy (Mark) Sommer of Vista, CA, Jan (Mike) Rohde of Madison, Peter (Kristin) of Tomah, Cindy (John) Smetana of St. Paul, MN, and Tony (Tracey) of Cloquet, MN; 22 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty (George) Plummer of Durand; one brother, Robert (Betty) Hartung of Elmwood; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, two infant brothers, Raymond and Edward, Fr. Edward, Carl and Wayne and one sister, Margaret Voss.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Menomonie on Friday, Aug. 28, at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Henry’s Catholic Cemetery in Eau Galle. Family and friends may call from 4-7 p.m. today (Thursday) at Rhiel Funeral Home in Menomonie and one hour prior to Mass at the church on Friday.

The family would like to thank Dr. Thirumalai, Dr. Hanna, the caregivers at Comforts of Home especially Sarah, Hazel and Calli, and Hospice Care for the loving support they provided.

Vivian J. (Schultz) Lucas

Vivian J. Schultz Lucas, 84, Davenport, FL, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009, under the care of her loving family and hospice.

She was born Feb. 26, 1925. in Tomah, WI, the daughter of Ernest and Ruby (nee Hennarichs) Schultz. She was a clerk and Union Steward for Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad for 41 years and a local resident since 2000 from the Chicago area where she was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dolton, IL. Locally she attended Woodlands Lutheran Church in Montverde. She was a former member of Lady Trainmen Lincolnettes Lodge #278 and former Moose Lodge member. Her father preceded her in death on Nov. 26,1964; her mother on Feb. 14, 1995, and her husband Herbert L. Lucas on Dec. 25, 2008, to whom she was married for 66 years. Also preceding her in death was her sister Elaine Arlys.

Surviving are her daughter Lynne T. (Sherman) Sidkey and granddaughter Traci Holmer, all of Davenport; granddaughter Lori (Nick) Ilickovich, Munster, IN; great-grandchildren Dale and Brad Holmer and Mitch LaRock and Alexa LaRock-Ilickovich; and siblings Delores Nilles, St. John, IN; Donna (Phil) Warner, Tomah, WI, and Douglas (Candy) Schultz, Peotone, IL, many nieces and nephews whom Vivian and her husband Herbert thoroughly enjoyed.

The funeral service for Vivian Lucas will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Thursday), Aug. 27, 2009, in the Becker Chapel. Rev. Dr. Milan G. Weerts, Woodlands Lutheran Church, will officiate.

Burial will follow in Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.

Visitation was from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday. The family graciously requests memorial contributions in her name to Good Shepherd Hospice, 105 Arneson Ave., Auburndale, FL.

Raymond Monroe Jr.

Raymond Monroe Jr., age 66, of Tomah, WI, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, WI. He was born on Dec.8, 1942, in Houston, TX, to Raymond and Maxine (Roy) Monroe Sr. He was raised in Los Angeles but moved back to Houston where he graduated from Jack Yates High School.

Ray met Mary Lobe in Los Angeles and they were married in Las Vegas, NV, on July 27, 1971. Together they moved to Tomah in 1972. Ray worked at Union Camp for 15 years before becoming a drug and alcohol counselor for ATTIC. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed fishing, working in the yard, deer hunting, being a handyman and traveling with Mary to Florida. His greatest love was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Monroe of Tomah; his children, Jack (Lisa) Todd of Reno, NV, Raymond (Jill) Monroe III of Tomah, and Joe (Niki) Monroe of Monroe, WI; grandchildren, Michael, Anastasia, Rhett, Caden, Ryan, Madison, Avery and Drew; a great-granddaughter, Neveah; a sister, Carol Oatis of Freemont, CA; and a cousin, who was like a brother to him, Henry Grayson of Los Angeles, CA; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Maxine; and a sister, Helen Vance.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Aug. 28, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tomah. The Very Rev. Steven J. Kachel will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Tomah. Family and friends are invited for visitation today (Thursday), Aug. 27, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Torkelson Funeral Home in Tomah. Family and friends are also invited for visitation on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church. The Torkelson Funeral Home of Tomah is assisting the family with arrangements.

Galen Sheridan

Galen Sheridan, 77, of Tomah, died Aug. 22, 2009, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire. He was born June 18, 1932, to Clair and Julia (Hasler) Sheridan in Scandinavia, WI. Galen was a U.S Navy veteran being awarded with the National Defense Service Medal. He worked for the Soo Line Railroad as a locomotive engineer for many years until his retirement. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his nieces and nephews. He also enjoyed his traveling and trips to the casino. He was a longtime participant in the National Veterans Golden Age Games.

He is survived by his sister, Joyce (Mark) Voskuil of Cedar Grove; a niece, Lori (Jeff) Dutter of Cedar Grove; a nephew, Davie (Helle) Voskuil of Abilene, TX; two great-nieces, Molly Dutter and Abby Voskuil; three great-nephews, Dustin Dutter, Bryan (Leighann) and Allan Voskuil, many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, Aug. 31, at 3 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 115 W. La Crosse St. Pastor Edwin W. Stigen will officiate. Burial will be at a later date.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at the church on Monday from 2 p.m. until the time of the service.

The Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
