A winter storm dumped a blanket of snow on the area overnight Monday into Tuesday morning, causing slippery roads and school closings.
The City of Tomah Wastewater Treatment Plant measured 5.5 inches of snow as of 8 a.m. Tuesday. As of 9:30 a.m., Tunnel City reported 6.9 inches, Warrens had 6.5 inches, Four Corners measured 6 inches, Sparta reported 5.5 inches and Wilton totaled 5.1 inches.
“For the last two days we have been plowing a lot of snow,” City of Tomah Public Works Director Ken Patterson told the City Council on Tuesday. “Last year was a tough winter, and the way we are starting now it could be again. But hopefully not.”
Patterson also reminded residents at the City Council meeting that the snow will bring some inconveniences that are uncontrollable.
“When we plow snow, we are going to plow snow in your driveway,” Patterson said. “There is nowhere else to go with it.”
The snow began falling around 3 p.m. on Monday, causing slippery road conditions for the evening commute. A representative of the Wisconsin State Patrol estimated that the patrol handled roughly seven or eight accidents between La Crosse and Juneau County during the storm along with approximately 25 or 30 slideoffs.
The Tomah School District cancelled after-school activities on Monday and closed on Tuesday. Norwalk-Ontario-Wilton, Royall and Sparta schools were also cancelled for the day.
As of Wednesday, the National Weather Service is calling for warmer temperatures this weekend, with highs in the mid-30s and possible snow showers or a wintry mix on Sunday.
