County budget hearing is Wednesday

The Monroe County Finance Committee has drafted a proposed County Budget that will go before the County Board and the public during the annual budget hearing on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the County Board Meeting Room in the Monroe County Courthouse.

Due in part to economic and credit turmoil, and to make room for a new county administrator position, several cuts were made to the proposed budget before it was balanced on Sept. 25. The County Board will consider a budget of $41,050,492, with a tax levy of $14,106,483 which is up slightly from $14,102,537 a year ago. The proposed mill rate is down slightly at 5.85 compared to 6.153 in 2007-2008.

The expenditures and revenues for 2009 are down substantially from 2008, but the drop is due to the Human Services Department’s participation in a consortium joined by the county. The revenue is down roughly $8 million from a year ago at $27,024,322, and the expenditures are $41,050,492 compared to over $9 million in 2008.

The County Board passed a resolution proceed with the creation of a Long-Term Care District, which is part of a state-wide expansion of the long-term care program known as Family Care.
