It was Senior Night, and the Tomah High School volleyball team’s senior class wasn’t about to let the 2008 season slip away without a victory on its home floor.
Tomah coach Greg Bever played all 11 of his seniors, and they came through with a 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 25-16 victory over Holmen Thursday at Tomah High School.
It was the Timberwolves’ first home victory of the season.
“They were pumped -- they wanted to win,” Bever said. “They wanted to end their home season on a positive note.”
Things didn’t look positive with the match tied at 1-1 and Holmen holding an 18-13 lead in the third game. Brandi Patterman began the Tomah rally with a spike, and Erin Dechant delivered a service ace to cut the gap to 18-15.
An unforced error pushed Holmen’s lead back to 19-15, but Chelsea Millin’s kill launched an 8-0 Tomah run. Holmen finally stopped the rally on an Angela Berkley spike and a Tomah hitting error, but a Holmen service error gave Tomah a 24-21 lead. On the 25th point, Caitlin Anderson dug out a hard Holmen spike, which kept the rally alive long enough for the Vikings to commit a hitting error.
Tomah took a 4-2 lead early in the fourth game and never trailed after that. A kill from Patterman extended Tomah’s lead to 8-3 before Holmen tied the game with the next five points.
A kill from Millin gave Tomah the lead for good at 10-9. After a Holmen kill from Lauren Schaller cut Tomah’s lead to 13-11, the Timberwolves scored the game’s next six points and never led by less than six after that. The match ended with a Holmen service fault.
“(Holmen) helped us out by missing a lot of serves,” Bever said.
The Timberwolves trailed for most of the first game. Bever called a timeout after the Vikings took a 15-11 lead, and Tomah gradually chipped away until taking a 21-20 lead on a Vikings’ illegal hit.
Tomah never trailed after that. Holmen called a timeout after Tomah’s lead hit 24-21, but that didn’t prevent Tomah from winning the next point. After a long rally, Patterman slammed a hard spike off the wrist of a Vikings’ player and out of bounds for game point.
“In the first and third games, we made the plays down the stretch,” Bever said.
Patterman led the hitting attack with 14 kills. Anderson had 16 digs, setter Michelle Luebke had 16 assists and seven digs, Brooke Von Haden had 12 digs, and Ariel Nauman had five kills, nine assists and nine digs.
“I thought it was a good team win,” Bever said. “It’s the way we have to play. We don’t have any superstars. Everyone has to contribute.”
Tomah’s regular-season finale is Tuesday at La Crosse Logan.
