It was a good week for Tomah High School golfer Shelby Hoeft.
Hoeft shot a 48 at Wednesday’s Mississippi Valley Conference/Big Rivers Conference Challenge, and she repeated her 48 score at the first MVC match of the season Thursday at Onalaska.
Hoeft tied for the 13th best score out of 48 golfers during the MVC/BRC meet held at the New Richmond Golf Club. Her only bad hole was the ninth, where she carded a nine, and that kept her from a spot in the top 10.
Brianna Francis was next for Tomah at 54. Megan McGinnis shot a 73, and Chelsea Gabower came in at 90.
The inclusion of McGinnis and Gabower allowed Tomah to post a team score.
Team scores were: Onalaska 180, Hudson 185, Holmen 186, Eau Claire Memorial 197, River Falls 197, New Richmond 209, Eau Claire North 210, La Crosse Central/La Crosse Logan 228, Tomah 265.
Hoeft was ninth at the Coulee Golf Bowl Thursday.
Francis shot at 57, followed by McGinnis at 60 and Gabower at 72.
Tomah again had four golfers -- the minimum necessary for a varsity match -- and the MVC posted a team score for the Timberwolves.
Team scores: Holmen 170, Onalaska 185, La Crosse Central/La Crosse Logan 187, La Crosse Aquinas 227, Tomah 237.
Christina DeBoer of Holmen and Alli Plath of Onalaska shared medalist honors by shooting one-over-par 38s.
Kennedy-Pierce returns
The Timberwolves got some good news early this week when senior Megan Kennedy-Pierce began swinging a golf club again. Tomah coach Tonya Gnewikow was convinced Kennedy-Pierce’s season was over when she suffered a nasty elbow injury shortly before the start of the season.
“At the start of the season, we didn’t she would be back at all, but her physical therapy is going very well,” Gnewikow said. “If she wouldn’t have gotten injured, she definitely would have been my number-three player.”
If Kennedy-Pierce can return to her pre-season form, it would give the Timberwolves a squad of four players capable of producing varsity-level scores.
“We’ll have a team, and we can compete,” Gnewikow said.
