Tomah brought down a Mississippi Valley Conference girls tennis powerhouse Tuesday.

Coach Cathy Brookman’s team pulled off one of the biggest victories in the history of Tomah High School girls tennis by knocking off La Crosse Aquinas, 4-3, in a dual match at Tomah High School.

It was only the fourth time since 2004 that Aquinas was defeated in an MVC dual. The Blugolds had won 21 of their last 24 MVC duals, and their run included the MVC championship in 2006.

“It was pretty exciting -- the girls are very proud to be part of a team that beat Aquinas,” Brookman said. “All of the girls had an excellent night. We were 3-3 until Lindsey Dietzman's match, where we took the lead. It was a great night for Tomah tennis.”

The win wasn’t a fluke. Only one of Tomah’s losses was in straight sets.

A big Tomah win came at number-two singles, where the Timberwolves’ Emily Haines battled back from a 6-1 loss in the first set to defeat Kim Richardson. Haines raised her record to 6-0.

“Emily had a great match; she really fought hard for the win,” Brookman said.

Dietzman, who was inserted into number-four doubles just last week, won her third straight match without losing a game.

Tomah boosted its overall record to 6-0. It was the MVC opener for both squads.

The Timberwolves’ next home match is Sept. 11 against La Crosse Central.
