Cathy Brookman is back as Tomah High School girls tennis coach.

Brookman, who stepped aside as head coach last year, is back for her seventh season. Her coaching contract is expected to be approved by the Tomah School Board Aug. 21. She also teaches English at the high school.

“I’m excited about the upcoming season,” Brookman told parents and athletes during the Tomah Sports Boosters kickoff barbecue Thursday. “We only graduated two seniors last year. We are a young and experienced team, and I’m looking forward to a successful season.”

Kristine Gerke coached the team last year. Gerke led the Timberwolves to a 7-5 overall dual record and a 2-4 mark in the MVC.

Brookman enjoyed a successful six-year run as head coach between 2001 and 2006. She coached conference Mississippi Valley Conference champion Jenny Kolb in 2003 and WIAA state tournament qualifier Erin Welch in 2005.

Brookman’s 2006 squad was 5-6 overall and 2-4 in the MVC.

Tomah’s first match is Aug. 19 at Onalaska Luther. The first home date is the Tomah Invitational Aug. 29 at the high school tennis courts beginning at 9 a.m.

" Does it occurr to you that if she wanted to coach she would have applied?Do you know she is on maternity leave right now? No one is questioning whether she is a good coach or not. "

Qualified wrote on Aug 19, 2008 10:42 AM:

" Whether or not Coach Brookman was appointed as head coach of the girls tennis squad is irrelevant. What is relevant is that she is more than qualified to be there. She is both a great coach and great role model for our young women.

Coach Brookman was instrumental in the tremendous growth the tennis team has experienced during the six years she was head coach. She is well respected by both players and parents. She is a good coach, is fair, hard working, plays by the rules, and is always interested in what the girls have going on in their lives, on and off the court, in the off-season and even after they have graduated from high school.

For three of the four years my daughter played varsity tennis, she had Cathy as her coach. She still talks about Coach Brookman - not only the fun she had but how much she learned from her.

This article was about her coming back as head coach. She is excited to be back with the girls. Don't belittle her enthusiasm at being back. Be grateful that we are lucky enough to have her working with our youth, both in and out of the classroom. "

" The teacher is usually the most qualified because they usually have the best interest of ALL the kids in mind. Not just the best interest of a 'few' kids. Ever notice how when someone from the "public" becomes a coach, they only coach when their kids are involved in the program. I wonder why that is? "

" The teacher appointed to c9oach tennis was is on maternity leave. That might tell you how lame any of the good old boys who applied were.Buswell and cronies like Moravec and Shudlick have all contibuted to the mess in girls basketball. boys basketball etc.... "

appointed wrote on Aug 18, 2008 5:19 PM:

" you teachers, did you ever think that maybe the public did apply and were considered not qualified, or better yet the public person was given the position and a greivance was filed so the position is still in question? Mr. Buswell has a valid point, lets see if the best person gets the positions before you bash us in the general public. "

Is anyone out there wrote on Aug 18, 2008 10:13 AM:

" People, Mr Buswell "Just wants what is best for the kids" so I guess no coach or appointed coaches who are teachers that do not volunteer for the job is what is best. Why is Moron-avec not applying for it, or the other cronies who are on the PARENTAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE.. oh wait, their kids graduated and now they are done. Thats right. "

Look what you have done wrote on Aug 15, 2008 7:58 AM:

" Mr. Buswell...the sports programs in Tomah are going down the drain. Thanks for nothing. "

Re appointed wrote on Aug 14, 2008 12:47 PM:

" Lets here from you Mr. Buswell??? Are you too busy putting your practice schedule together for basketball? I thought according to you and your cronies Tomah would have hundereds interested in coaching boys bb ball! Any replys? Please lets here your comments, or are you going to sit behind your desk on this one since your kids are gone? We're waiting! "

" She just gave birth to her secind child. To Make her coach is pathetic. Brian Buswell should be appoibted and all the other tomahites who have created an atmosphere where no sane teacher wants to coach. Will we ever get a boys hoops coach?I know th local cult had a candidate. "

It was our chance to get BRETT wrote on Aug 14, 2008 1:24 AM:

" What happened MR. Buswell did you forget to see if Brett would of been interested in Coaching in Toamh before he got sent to the Jets??? I mean I think you thought that Barry Alverez would come to Tomah why not Brett heck he owns land or at least hunts in Cataract . I guess when your children were in school you thought you would be the big dog on campus and sue the school district. By the way I helped pay for the settlement along with yourself and all residents of the Tomah school district. It was not a GOLD medal performance by you but, I am sure You will be remembered by alot of residents by different names other than Mr. Buswell but we can leave that to each others imagination. I would hope that when Mr. Curran is spending all that money at the paper we make sure to get a tear sheet so we can forward them to Mr. Buswell to forward to his many Qualified coaches waiting in the weeds for the right job. It is sad when a Teacher has to be appointed because we can not find anyone that is qualified or is brave enough to face the horrible parents in this district. How well do you think our kids will do with a highly unmotivated teacher who does not really want to be coaching ?? Mr. Buswell you and your brother could of been heros if you only you would of gotten Brett in Tomah as a coach.Until then we will continue to heardoes this violate open meeting laws due to Buswell vs Tomah at many school board meetings to come. "

" she was appointed head coach.. lets the story straight. Stay tuned for other teachers and their appointed coaching positions. Where is Mr. Buswells list of prospective coaches? Boys bball is still open!! If I were a teacher, I would move far away from this district. "
