Tomah Torpedoes bring competitive drive to Aquatic Center

From a few blocks away Saturday, the Tomah Aquatic Center sounded like E.J. McKean Field during a track & field meet or football game.

There’s nothing like competition to pump up the noise.

The Aquatic Center was in full competitive mode during the Tomah Torpedoes annual swim invitational. Mauston, Sparta and La Crescent joined Tomah for the four-team event.

It was the last meet of the 2008 season.

“We have a really good crowd here, and they’ve been really supportive,” coach Izzy Neitzel said. Neitzel coaches the team along with Sarah Saunders and Ross Grover. “It’s great to have everyone cheering around the pool.”

The crowd had plenty of opportunities to cheer. The meet featured 82 events for swimmers ages eight to 18.

Twenty-five athletes are members of this year’s Tomah team. Neitzel said it’s a hard-working and enthusiastic group.

“They just love the water,” she said. “We have some eight-year-olds who are such hard workers. They go at it as hard as any of the older ones.”

The team gets support from the Tomah Parks & Recreation Department, which runs the Aquatic Center. The department assisted the team with supplies and provided manpower for the meet.

Neitzel said the program has an encouraging future.

“We have a lot of returners from last year, but we’re still a young team,” she said. “A lot of them should be back next year.”

Results of the meet are as follows:
