The Tomah American Legion Seniors baseball team wrapped up its 2008 season with an 11-10 victory at LaFarge Sunday.

Tomah finished the season with a 5-7 record.

It was the final game for Kevin Barth, Tyler Felber and Mytchel Schmidt. They are the only three seniors who continued to compete through the end of their American Legion eligibility.

“Tyler, Mytchel and Kevin -- they’re all wonderful young men and would do anything for you,” Tomah coach Matt Dutton said. “They played a lot of different positions and really helped the younger guys. Those three kids -- I wish the best of luck to them in whatever they do.”

Tomah held off a furious LaFarge rally in the bottom of the seventh to send Barth, Felber and Schmidt off on a winning note. Tomah led, 11-5, heading into the seventh inning, before LaFarge nearly tipped the outcome with a 5-run outburst.

Felber was the winning pitcher. He hurled a complete game and helped himself by going 3-for-3 at the plate with five RBIs.

Barth added a two-run double.

Tomah belted only five hits but took advantage of wildness on the part of LaFarge’s pitching staff.

“We played a lot of small ball -- bunting guys over and taking the extra base,” Dutton said. “We took advantage of a lot of walks and passed balls.”

Tomah was scheduled to play its finale Tuesday at Bangor, but Bangor cancelled to preserve its pitching staff for the regional tournament.

Tomah won’t field a team in this week’s Region 4 Seniors tournament at Holmen due to lack of players. Tomah had only four players over the age of 16, and only three players younger than 16 can play in both the Juniors and Seniors tournaments. All of Tomah’s 16-and-under players suited up for last weekend’s Juniors tournament at Tomah’s Dennis Senz Field. Reedsburg won that tournament and will compete in the Juniors state tournament this weekend in Prairie du Chien.
