The Monroe County Board will hear an update on the Justice Center building project at its monthly meeting on Wednesday at the County Board Room in the Courthouse Annex. The board will also hear a presentation from La Crosse County Administrator Steve O’Malley as Monroe County continues to investigate the possibilities of hiring its own county administrator.

The County Board’s Administrative Committee discussed the possibility of hiring an administrator on July 8, and agreed that an administrator would benefit the county. The committee voted to move discussion forward to the county board, and supervisor Pete Peterson — who is in favor of a county administrator — contacted O’Malley to speak to the board. No action will be taken on the issue Wednesday.

The Building Committee’s Teresa Pierce will present an update on the Justice Center design. A major topic will be discussion and possible action on a plan for the front entrance of the Justice Center. The committee met with a member of the Department of Transportation (DOT) at its meeting on July 11, and discussed three options for access to the facility.

One option would allow Theatre Road to function and have the county connect to Theatre Road as the only access. A second option would involve allowing a driveway straight across from Riley Road in Sparta. The county driveway would be a public road and the DOT would design an elaborate intersection to include by-pass lanes and right turn lanes for safety reasons. A third option would be the construction of a T-intersection off of Highway 16, approximately 875 feet west of Riley Road. This would also include by-pass and right turn lanes.

Representatives from the DOT and City of Sparta will be in attendance for the county board’s discussion on Wednesday.
