Wisconsin Dells came to Tomah and issued a bunch of free passes.
They weren’t to the water parks; they were to first base.
Tomah drew 10 walks, and two more batters were hit by pitches in a 7-2 Tomah American Legion baseball Juniors victory over Wisconsin Dells Monday at Senz Field.
It was Tomah’s final regular season game before this week’s 6-team regional tournament at Senz Field. While Tomah didn’t knock the cover off the baseball, its batting order was patient enough to draw walks and advance on wild pitches.
Even had Wisconsin Dells not been so generous, Tomah still would have won. Tomah pitcher Alex Egstad was dominant through five innings of work, and the Tomah lefthander would have likely pitched a complete game had the contest been close.
“I preach getting ahead 0-1 and throwing strikes, and that’s what Alex went out there and did,” Tomah coach Matt Dutton said. “He has good movement on his fastball, and he’s getting into a groove. He went out and dominated.”
Egstad struck out nine, walked one and didn’t allow a hit until two outs in the fourth. Ryan Felber pitched the sixth inning, and Trenton McCaskey pitched the seventh. McCaskey issued a two-out walk but registered a strikeout to end the game.
Tomah took a lead it would never relinquish in the second. Jared Dietzman led off the inning with a single, and McCaskey drew a walk. Both eventually scored on wild pitches to give Tomah a 2-0 lead.
Tomah got two more runs without the benefit of a hit in the third. Egstad scored on a wild pitch, and Dietzman scored on a the front end of a double steal.
In the fifth, Tomah generated another two-run rally. Egstad led off with a single and later scored on Alex Gandy’s single. McCaskey later reached on an error and scored via a wild pitch to push Tomah's lead to 6-0.
Wisconsin Dells scored two runs in the sixth before Tomah scored a run in the bottom of the frame. Ryan Felber drew a one-out walk, went to second on a wild pickoff throw and then advanced all the way from second on a wild pitch.
Tomah finished its regular season with a 2-5 record. Both victories came at home.
