Tomah swim team competes at Sparta

The Tomah Torpedoes Swim team traveled to Sparta on June 28 for their second meet of the season.

Despite the constantly changing weather, they posted some nice results before the meet was called due to approaching storms.

Most notable was Desirae Bennett, who broke the Tomah open girls records for the 50-meter freestyle, 50-meter butterfly, and 50-meter backstroke. All three of these records were originally set in 2002 and 2003 by Amber Hodges. The complete team results are:

8-under 100m medley relay girls: team of Olivia Waddell, Claudia Neve, and Genevieve Kearns 2nd; team of Hannah Jo Jensen, Mackenzie Linenberg, Natalie Fleming, and Ellie Fischer 4th; Boys: team of Kyle Burkhalter, Dylan Leis, and James Lanska 4th.

8-under 25m freestyle: Dylan Leis 2nd.

9-10 25m freestyle: Christian Bennett 4th, James Lanska 6th.

11-12 50m freestyle: Josh Jensen 5th.

Open 50m freestyle: girls: Desirae Bennett 1st, Boys: Blaze Rouse 4th.

9-10 25m butterfly: Christian Bennett 3rd, James Lanska 4th.

14-under 50m butterfly boys: Kevin Dwyer 4th, John Lanska 5th.

Open 50m butterfly: Desirae Bennett 2nd.

9-10 100m Individual Medley: James Lanska 3rd.

13-14 200m Individual Medley: John Lanska 4th.

8-under 25m backstroke: Olivia Waddell 6th.

11-12 50m backstroke: Matt Mueller 2nd, Dillon Benson 3rd.

Open 50m backstroke: Desirae Bennett 2nd.

8-under 50m freestyle: Dylan Leis 1st.

9-10 50m freestyle: James Lanska 3rd.

11-12 100m freestyle: Matt Mueller 3rd.

8-under 25m breaststroke girls: Natalie Fleming 3rd. Boys: Dylan Leis 1st.

9-10 25m breaststroke: Christian Bennett 2nd.

The team is coached by Izzy Neitzel, Sarah Saunders, and Ross Grover and practices from 4:30-6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

The team competes in West Salem on July 12 and will host its own meet at the Tomah Aquatic Center on Aug. 2.
