Two Democrats and one Republican will seek the 92nd State Assembly district seat that will be vacated by Rep. Terry Musser this fall. The deadline to declare candidacy was Tuesday.
Curtis Miller, of Sparta, and Mark Radcliffe, of Black River Falls, will seek the Democratic nomination. The fall primary elections will take place on Sept. 9.
Miller, a hospital chaplain at Franciscan Skemp Health Care Center in Sparta, lost to Musser as the Democratic nominee for the 92nd district in 2006. He announced his candidacy in early May, and said that he hopes to tackle healthcare issues, if elected.
Radcliffe, an attorney and small business owner, said that increasing gas prices, health care costs and rising taxes are overburdening in the 92nd district.
Dan Hellman, a Republican from Sparta, will run unopposed for the Republican nomination. Hellman, a former Monroe County District Attorney and Sparta businessman, pointed to growing the economy, creating good jobs and reducing the tax burden as key issues in his attempt to win the seat.
Rep. Musser announced in May that he would not be seeking re-election.
In the 50th assembly district, which includes all of Juneau County and portions of Sauk and Richland Counties, Rep. Sheryl Albers will also not be seeking re-election. Albers, a Republican from the Reedsburg area, has held the seat since 1991. Six men will seek the vacant seat this fall.
Four Republican candidates will square off in the fall primary. The candidates are Todd Allbaugh of Richland Center, Ed Brooks of Reedsburg, Craig Buswell of Kendall and Anthony Carver of Necedah.
Allbaugh was a communication director for State Senator Dale Schultz and district director for Congressman Scott Klug. Brooks has served as chair for the Town of Reedsburg. Buswell has served in the municipal government of the town of Kendall, and Carver is a former legislative aide to Albers.
Tom Crofton of Richland Center and Darryl Teske of Mauston will seek the Democratic nomination. Crofton works as a carpenter, and Teske is a former legislative aide for 79th district Rep. Sondy Pope-Roberts.
In the 96th district, which includes portions of Vernon, Crawford and Monroe counties, Repbulican incumbent Lee Nerison of Westby will face competition from Democrat Dale Klemme of Prairie du Chien. Nerison was first elected to the assembly in 2004 and re-elected in 2006. Klemme is a former small business owner and community planner in Prairie du Chien.
State Senator Dan Kapanke will run for re-election in the 32nd Senate District, which includes La Crosse, Vernon, Crawford, and a portion of Monroe County. Kapanke, who lives in La Crosse, was first elected in 2004. He will face Tara Johnson, a Democrat from La Crosse, in the November election.
In Monroe County, several county races will feature unopposed incumbents.
Monroe County District Attorney Dan Cary, a Republican, will seek re-election. Other county incumbents that have announced their re-election bids are county clerk Susan Matson, county treasurer Annette Erickson, register of deeds John Burke, and county surveyer Gary Sime.
