A faulty manhole has created a slight snag in the efforts to repair a sewer pipe that collapsed under Hwy. 16 on Friday.

Work on the pipe began on Friday and continued through the weekend. A new pipe is in place, but a manhole on the east side of Hwy. 16 was found to have also sunk, resulting in the replacement of the manhole today (Monday).

“At this point, it didn’t go as good as we were hoping,” Wastewater operator Brandy Leis said of the weekend construction. “We found a manhole that was bad, and it sunk, too.”

Leis said that Mathy Construction was scheduled to blacktop the closed portion of Hwy. 16 on Wednesday, but that plan has since been abandoned. The new hope, Leis said, is to have the manhole replaced by Friday. Rezin Construction is working on the manhole replacement, and worked to replace the damaged pipe over the weekend.

The affected pipeline is 18 feet below ground and no sewage leaked onto the road when it collapsed on Friday, Wastewater Supervisor Don Pierce said. A section of the highway approximately 75 feet long and 50 feet wide was cut to work on the pipe. The road will remain closed until it is blacktopped, Leis said.

The Tomah Police Department reported that the detours will remain in effect.
