The Tomah VFW softball squad improved its record to 5-1 with a 2-1, 6-4 sweep of Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau Red in a pair of five-inning contests Wednesday at Gerke Field.
Tomah came from behind in both games.
In the first game, G-E-T took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third before Tomah rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Shelby Walton and Brittany Swanson led off the inning with consecutive singles, and Lindsey Betthauser rapped a single that tied the game at 1-1. Swanson then scored the go-ahead run on a groundout by Crystal Segovia.
The visitors appeared certain to at least tie the game in the top of the fifth. The first three G-E-T batters reached on errors to load the bases, but Betthauser pitched out of the jam by serving up a strikeout, foul popup and groundout to end the game.
Betthauser struck out six and gave up just three hits.
In the second game, when G-E-T was the home team, Tomah didn’t put a runner on base until the third inning. Walton reached on a two-out error and scampered home on three wild pitches to tie the game at 1-1.
A long sacrifice fly gave G-E-T a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third, but Tomah took the lead for good in the top of the fourth. Dana Lindley led off with a walk, went to second on Emilee Burkhalter’s groundout and scored on Ali Van Havermaet’s run-scoring single.
Maggie Ruedy then followed with a home run that stayed just inside the leftfield foul pole to put Tomah ahead, 4-2. Tomah got one more run in the inning when Kala Lindley blasted a triple to centerfield and crossed home plate on a throwing error.
Tomah got another run in the fifth. Walton led off with a walk and was erased when Dana Lindley reached on a fielder’s choice. Lindley then stole second and scored on a Burkhalter single.
Van Havermaet pitched a complete game for Tomah. She struck out nine.
G-E-T only brought seven players to the game and borrowed two players from Tomah to complete the team. One of G-E-T’s assistant coaches is former Tomah High School softball standout Kaleigh Curran, who played for the Winona State team last spring. She took one at-bat against Van Havermaet in the second game and hit a single.
Tomah won its first two games of the season, 5-3, 3-2, June 11 over Chaseburg/Coon Valley. The Tomah Journal website mistakenly reported those games were postponed.
