Tomah police had to go to great lengths Monday to catch a suspected drunken driver who reportedly tried to hide from police by jumping in a swamp.

Michael J. Grider, 28, of Tomah was pulled over for speeding on Hwy. 21 about one-half mile east of Tomah about 9:50 p.m.

Immediately after stopping the vehicle he was driving, Grider ran and jumped into a swampy area on the south side of Hwy. 21, according to Tomah police.

The officer yelled at Grider to stop, but Grider went out further into the swamp and hid behind some weeds about 50 yards from shore.

A few moments later, Grider disappeared and refused to talk to police.

Police officers and members of the Tomah Fire Department used a boat to find Grider hiding in some weeds and hauled him to shore, where he was arrested.

Grider could be charged with third offense operating while intoxicated, second offense operating after revocation, resisting officers, unreasonable and imprudent speed, and three counts of bail jumping from Jefferson and Dane counties.

As officers struggled to find Grider, officers contacted the owner of the vehicle, Alicia T. Blackhawk, 26, of rural Tomah, who said the vehicle had been stolen. Police, however, later determined that was not true, and Blackhawk was arrested for obstructing officers.

Yes they are bad people wrote on Jun 19, 2008 11:24 AM:

" They are criminals whose actions could have killed any innocent person that happened to be near them. One of them risked the lives of everyone else on the road so he could drive home, and the other covered it up.

It's stupid opinions like yours, and other apologists for criminals who make our city less safe. "So what if he sells drugs to kids, he's not a bad person." "Who cares if he killed someone, he's my uncle and he's nice to me."

The problem is people like you who think it's ok for you to violate whatever laws you want because you think it's ok. "

" There is nothing awesome about what either one of them did. They broke the law and endangered others. Throw the book at him. "

" Well said - this coming from a person who was hit by a drunk driver. The driver, who was driving without a license, because he had been caught drinking/driving decided he was above the law. For some reason I made it out of a fully engulfed, burning vehicle and watched this idiot get a slap on his wrist, then 20 years later find out that after my accident, he had been charged with at least 7 more DWI's and involved in at least 2 more accidents. So anyone thinking these people are AWESOME, needs to maybe experience what I did and then they might change their minds. AWESOME!!!!!!!!! "

" There is a difference in doing something wrong, and allowing someone that is drunk, take your car where he could have killed himself and someone else. Point blank, who cares if he kills himself?? Obviously he doesn't care or he woulnd't get behind the wheel everytime he has a drink. Lets all remember, this isn't the first time he's been charged with drunk driving....and those were the times he's been caught. No body cares if he kills himself in a crash because he's drunk...his life isn't that important. What matters is who he kills in the process. I can tell you if he ever got in a car drunk, and killed my daughter and not himself....I'd kill him and the person that allowed him to use the car. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one that feels this way. My child's life, my family's lives, my friends lives and my life are important to me and everytime he has a drink, he's threatening lives.
So for those that are defending him on this page...Yeah, getting behind the wheel drunk...ThATS AWESOME!!! They are good people so we can forgive the fact that they are threatening our lives everytime they have a drink....THATS AWESOME!! Its time to grow up and realize that the AWESOME peope aren't worth the time I spent writing this message. "

" Actually Blackhawk committed a crime, thus she is not "awesome." How sad it is that you are too dense to even realize this. Lying to the cops to cover up her friend wasn't smart and hopefully she is found guilty of Obstructing. Peace! "

" Alicia Blackhawk is my aunt. I know Michael. They are to great people!! I don't get wht all you people are getting all OMG they did something wrong. You people have to have done SOMETHING wrong in your life. Like I said they are not BAD people they are awesome. "

" I was stopped and the Tomah "officer" made it quite clear he was ready to pull his side arm. I was guilty of have no spotlight ( a crime?) and OWC (operating while caucasion). I'm amazed this person didn't get shot! Tomah cops are NO joke, they have absolute power and they will use it. "

" Isn't this just an alternative lifestyle we need to be more tolerant of? We must refrain from imposing our morality on Mr. Grider, and respect his right to choose. Otherwise, we are in danger of becoming a Christian theocracy. "
