Over 10 innings Wednesday, the Tomah VFW 18-and-under girls softball team was outscored 24-4 by La Crosse Aquinas.

Tomah still emerged from the evening with a split.

Ali Van Havermaet took the mound for Tomah in game two and played a huge role in Tomah’s 4-2 victory in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Gerke Field.

The nightcap was an important get-well game for a Tomah team that suffered a 22-0 rout in the opener.

It was still 0-0 in the top of the fifth inning of the second game before Tomah finally scored its first runs of the evening.

Leah Rezin began the rally with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch with one out. Emilee Burkhalter then struck out, but the third strike eluded the catcher, who attempted to gun down Burkhalter at first. The throw was wild, and Rezin sprinted around third base to tally the game’s first run.

Kendra Bundy then reached on an error, which left runners on second and third. Michelle Luebke followed with a bloop double that scored Burkhalter and Bundy, and Van Havermaet followed with a single that scored Luebke for Tomah’s fourth run.

Aquinas scored a pair of runs after two outs in the bottom of the fifth (Aquinas was the home team for the nightcap), but second baseman Amber Schultz speared a line drive to end the game.

Tomah collected six hits in the second game. Ally Von Haden had two of them.

Tomah catcher Brooke Von Haden doused a potential Aquinas rally in the first by gunning down a runner attempting to steal second base

Van Havermaet kept Aquinas from putting the ball in play by ringing up strikeouts for eight of her 15 outs. She walked three.

In the first game, Tomah put two runners on base in the first inning but didn’t do much after that. Lindsey Betthauser’s single in the third inning was Tomah’s only hit over the last four frames.

Aquinas took control with eight runs in the second inning and eight more in the third. Kala Lindley pitched a one-two-three fourth inning for Tomah.

The 18-and-under squad has home doubleheaders at Gerke Field every Wednesday evening until July 30. All games are 5:30 p.m. starts.
