Brieske steps aside as softball coach

After eight seasons, Ron Brieske has stepped aside as Tomah High School softball coach.

Brieske, who led Tomah to its first-ever WIAA state tournament berth two seasons ago, said the conflict with his business obligations drove the decision. He owns an accounting firm (Associated Accounting), and the first month of the season overlaps with the busiest month of income tax preparation.

“There was absolutely nothing wrong as far as the softball is concerned,” Brieske said. “My business keeps me so busy that I can’t get away at 3 (p.m.) anymore. If the circumstances could remain the same, I would keep doing it.”

In 2001, Brieske took over for a program that hadn’t posted a winning record since 1995. He coached Tomah past the .500 mark in 2005 and then led the team to four post-season victories during its stunning state tournament run a year later.

His last two teams posted losing records, but both squads played much better in May than they did in April.

The 2008 team swept arch-rival Sparta and pulled off a late-season upset over Holmen. The win denied Holmen a share of the Mississippi Valley Conference championship. A week later in the WIAA regional semifinals, Holmen defeated Tomah, 2-0, in Brieske’s final game as head coach.

Brieske made it clear that he favors varsity assistant and pitching coach Dan Wall as his successor. Brieske credits Wall for developing Abby Breitung into a state-tournament caliber pitcher.

Wall, who has coached the summer team sponsored by the VFW, has also worked with sophomore Ali Van Havermaet, who made great strides in harnessing her control during the second half of the 2008 season. Van Havermaet gave up just 11 runs in the final four MVC contests.

“Dan certainly has my recommendation,” Brieske said. “I can’t imagine who else they would hire.”

RE To Dad Moving to D School wrote on Jul 16, 2008 11:23 AM:

" To the Dad who is taking his kids from a D-1 school to a D-6. Good luck and we wish your kids well. But if you do decide to do what is best for your kids and let them stay, there are plenty of coaching positions available for you to apply for. But remember, just because you played sports, doesn't mean you can coach. Look at the girls basketball program when Amy Olson and Scott Tubbs were coaching. They were terrific athletes, but didn't fare well at all coaching. We probably could use your girls in the softball program, so maybe you could just move to the D-6 school and leave you girls here to play. "

" I am not ashamed to live in Tomah, nor am I ashamed to say that my kids will grow up playing sports in Tomah. If you all hate Tomah so much, leave! Take your kids and move to a D6 school, watch them sit the bench there. If they don't want to work to succeed here in Tomah, they most likely won't succeed there either. The way all you "adults" talk, there is no wonder kids in Tomah give up! What support you offer. Me... I may not agree with every call my kids coaches make, I am still there to support my sons and their teams. The grass isn't always greener on the other side. "

Maybe get rid of some of their fanatical fans? Some of these postings are insane. I am a firm believer in extra-curricular involvement for the purpose of building self confidence, but with a timeout we could save money in a time of need. Hmmm... Failing sports scene failing schools, rising drugs in town. Yes I am so happy to be moving so my CHILDREN will have a better life. I guess anyone with a brain and not a BIG NAME around here has no say in the matter. When was the last time a girls team was successful in the MVC as in conference champs. Oh well 11 years. but thats ok because you dont care you will say winning isn't everything and you will make my case. Myself I played sports on every level accept professionally and have always wanted to WIN something most Tomah girls sports fans don't know the meaning of the word. So we will move and that D6 school will love to have us and I will get very involved in coaching softball and volleyball and basketball because at least they know how to run a program and they APPRECIATE participation from parent and not look down on it like the TOmah school district and Activities Director. THe only reason I am on the sidelines here is the people that I would have to work with and People like you who I would have to deal with. NO, 20000 dollars are not enough for these jobs in Tomah but for free in any other school is fine with me. That tells you the state of Tomahs athletics. "

re ashley abbott wrote on Jun 26, 2008 3:53 PM:

" First off I want to say that I have a ton of respect for you and love your daughter because she is one of my good friends and has been forever. I coached in the summer recreation program for 4 years and coached a VFW team too, along wit coaching the JV team at Holmen this year. So I have seen first hand what goes on in our summer ball program, and not to mention playing summer ball for years. No coach that Tomah gets will ever be good enough for all the parents and players in our town. Just look at all the sports that have openings for coaches, and it seems as no one is getting in line either. Its not the coachs fault that we are so shallow in the pool of pitchers around here. Not every girl grows up with a father that gets so involved like me and your daughters have. I just know that Coach Wall has a lot of passion for the game of fast pitch softball; he has been playing and pitching his whole life. He has a lot of knowledge for the game that he can pass on, if girls are willing to work. I know the girls that he has coached in the past and the ones he is coaching now would say that he pushes them to better, and if girls listen to him, they will get better. But the reality is that many girls, here and everywhere else, dont want to be coached, dont want to work hard in the off season; they just want to be on a team. These girls will never get better, and these are the girls who are not going to want Coach Wall to be the head coach. I think Wall knows what has to be done to turn this program around, and with Keenes help and girls who are hungry to succeed, I have no doubt in my mind that it will happen. "

" Ok first of all if Dan Wall was smart he would stay FAR away from any coaching. As he has seen what goes with it from the boys program to the girls, two are much in the same. Move to your new town, where the coach is PERFECT, I hope they welcome you because we are glad to be rid of you!!! As far as looking for new coaches, I almost fell off of my chair laughing!! Have you noticed how many spots there are to fill.. oh my, and to find someone willing to put in the time to do all of the things you want for a mere $2000 a year is REDICULOUS... there are no lines and no one applying for most of these spots. Good luck in the new town, let me guess that are moving to the Yearning for Zion compound? "

Spike wrote on Jun 26, 2008 9:35 AM:

" Maybe you should apply for the softball job and the girls bball job, as you are the ONLY person who is getting it I guess. Your girls should start, pitch etc.. but what happened to the team aspect. Maybe the oldest daughter could be your asst. Problem solved I guess. Think about this though, have you EVER liked or agreed with a coach who has attempted to coach your daughters? Probably not, there lies the problem. "

TOMAH HOOPS: The boys and girls basketball programs at Tomah are still without head coaches.

Tomah activities director Tom Curran said Wednesday that an interview with an internal candidate for the girls job was scheduled for today.

Outside applicants interested in coaching the boys team need to apply by Monday. Curran also said Monday is the deadline to apply for fall openings to lead the boys soccer and girls tennis teams, too.

Thank you, Tomah, even more than we thought before!!

Re ashley Abbott wrote on Jun 25, 2008 3:45 PM:

" Really ashley you named one girl who was changed and that was from her junior to senior year. I went to a lot of games because my daughter played beside you for 3 years. I watched you girls develope from playing baseball to softball. I scared the ** out of you at kennedy park when you thought the cops were after you. Ive coached high school level and the summer teams my daughter is on. We have ALWAYS been behind the 8 ball when it comes to pitching. I even requested one day a week last year for Coach wall to work with the younger girls to learn how to pitch. It didn't happen. Abby was one of the best girls athletes that tomah has ever had and she did turn into a great pitcher but we dont have too many Abby's in the school system and if You would watch any summer softball you would see our girls dont stand a chance against our conference pitching at any level.
To develope a winning system you have to be involved from top to bottom. Tomah has a history of a disconnect between younger kids programs and using that to develope high school success. For instance look at volleyball. There was teams formed during the winter and played tournys around the state. YOu playe on some. The school district was dead against it because it was distracting to the basketball players. The coaches stated one or the other even though it did NOT conflict with each other. The AD didn't allow them to use school property for practices. I would have continued to coach softball since I have 3 girls that will play but we will be moving to another town. We are moving to a town where the head coach is involved with most all aspects of the softball teams. The coaches are on the same page and the teams have went to sectionals numerous times and to state also. Even though they are very small they have just as many quality pitchers and players as tomah has in the system. Small as in division 6. I guess its what the school district and ad will settle for. One of success or one of convenience. Ashley you also was one in a million for the tomah softball team. YOu developed how?? in the braves and arrows organization not girls softball. Your driving force was your father who coached all of your teams to be a great player. If you would have went 6 and 14 your senior year and lost in the first round would you have been so happy with your career in tomah. Winning is not the only thing but it does make the season fun if you win a little. I just think its easier to hand the ball to Coach Wall than maybe look around for some new ideas and coaches in the area. Just a thought. "

If you haven't been coached by these two awesome individuals, you have no right to criticize them. Both of them, along with Coach Keene were great. I am sad to see Brieske go, but think that Coach Wall is a great candidate for head coach.

Thanks for all the memories Coach Brieske!

And in response to the poster Wall:

You dont think that Coach Wall should be head coach because you arent impressed with the pitchers he develops. Have you ever been to a game? I watched him take Abby Brietung from a wild, non consistent, ok pitcher to pitching at the State Tournament. Being the catcher for four years I was able to watch all of the athletes Wall worked with develop. He is a great coach, and I dont see any other option for Tomah Softball. Also, how are you going to blame the fact that Wall cant turn girls into All-Star pitchers, its not his fault, its the lacking programs we have for young girls.

Good Luck Coach Wall!

Wall wrote on Jun 22, 2008 6:15 PM:

" I guess I would have to disagree with the coach. Mr. Wall is supposed to be such a great pitching coach but Tomah is always behind the MVC in quality pitching throughout Tomah softball. Watching and coaching Tomah softball the last several years we've always been looking for pitching. The pitchers that do come up usually learn it from their parents or someone other than the Tomah coaching staff. Mr. Brieske had one winning season and a lucky run to state. He managed to get his daughter a scholarship and the AD's daughter recognition. We need to look for a coach that has won and knows how to win. Wall has had 8 years under Brieske and really has not seen how to produce a constant winner each year. The kids are there in the system. They just have to be taught and motivated to succeed in Tomah. "
