Published - Sunday, June 22, 2008 Kindergarten leads school board agenda The Tomah School Board’s Four-Year-Old Kindergarten Ad-Hoc Committee will make its initial presentation during the board’s regular monthly meeting Thursday at the school district office. The committee, which first met in April, will recommend moving forward to develop and implement a plan to establish 4-year-old kindergarten in Tomah, most likely by the start of the 2009-10 school year. Committee members May 27 crafted a 340-word resolution that outlines the arguments in favor of four-year-old kindergarten. Committee members will ask permission to pursue the next phase of the details of a four-year-old kindergarten. The committee has been supportive of an approach that includes licensed day care centers. Board members will also hear an update on proposed new tennis courts at LaGrange Elementary School. Since the item is listed in “reports,” the board won’t be able to take any action on the issue. The courts are estimated to cost $252,000, which doesn’t include lights. Other agenda items include: * Request to maintain the open lunch period at Tomah High School. Students are allowed to leave campus during the lunch period, and the board reviews the policy on an annual basis. * Approval of short-term borrowing to plug gaps in state aid payments. * Revised elementary enrollments/classroom assignment and possible request for an additional teacher. * Appointment of new member to the Activities Review Board. * Request to continue the TV production/computer graphics art class at the high school. * Set the graduation date for the Class of 2009. * Report on diversity conference in Colorado. * Resignations/approval of contracts. * Recognition of staff/students. * Review of board polices on controversial issues in the classroom, employee ethics, open enrollment, suspensions and expulsions. The Finance Committee will met at 6:45 p.m., followed by the Personnel Committee at 7:15.
