The Cranberry Express gas station at Jellystone Park in Warrens was denied a liquor license by the Warrens Village Board last week.

Jellystone Park owner Ed Van der Molen made the request to the Warrens Village Board at its May 22 meeting as customers stopping at Cranberry Express have asked about purchasing beer. Nearly 15 people attended the meeting, Wisconsin Cranberry Discovery Center Director Lorry Erickson said.

The main opposition to the liquor license for Cranberry Express came from Scott Edgerton of the Warrens Mall and Charles Dutcher of The Bog, Erickson said. Several individual citizens also spoke on the issue at the meeting, including some who were concerned about safety should people drive golf carts at Jellystone to the Cranberry Express to get alcoholic beverages.

Erickson also noted that the village office had received emails and phone calls against the application for a liquor license during the previous week. Trustee Jason Krultz made the motion to deny the request.

" Dear Past Warrens resident-

We are glad to hear that you are a "past" resident.

Who cares that "Mr Edgerton..married into the family business!" Does that have anything to do with the issue?

The fact is that the Warrens Mall has been around my entire life and has always been an integral part of the Warrens community. In fact, my saying is "the mall with it all, if they don't have it, you don't need it!"

Go Get 'Em Scott & Michelle!! "

" Do away with jobs too. Ever think that SOMEONE approved this from your town?? Obviously THEY are the ones that decided he could expand, etc. You wanted the economy, now you complain about it. You can't have it both ways.....I guess if you don't like those things you should have protested before it was built, not after. "

" Just to let all of you know who are not Warrens savy, the Mr Edgerton that you are all refering to is just the owner of the Warrens Mall because he married into the family business! Really Michelle Edgerton and her family the Gilletes are the one's who made the business what it is today. Mr Edgerton just basically married into it. Denny and Joyce are the one's who truly made it a community conveinience. Personally alot of Warrens residents are not happy with the Warrens Mall and it's new owners now. I can say I don't blame them for opposing the liquor license but let's get real it has nothing to do with safety, it's all about money!!!!! Safety is not driving a vehicle through Warrens to get alcohol it would be much safer to get alcohol right at the Jellystone Park. "

" I believe Jellystone has ruined our little town. It was such a nice place when it was just a campground, and had the mini golf and ponds and swimming pools for the local kids. It got too big too fast thanks to greedy Mr. V. He's in it for all the money he can get, he doesn't care about the Warrens community. I still bypass the BP station out there and drive to the Warrens Mall for gas and whatever else. The price doesn't matter to me, its the idea that I'd be contributing to Ed's mess he made on the west side of our quiet little town that sickens me. I'd rather spend my money at a locally owned business. You will never be as big as the dells Mr. V, quit trying! "

" Ever think this might just help him out??? I'm sure he has hefty bills to pay, but he also employs several people in the area. This little spat over a license is just silliness. Lot's of people drink while they are camping, in fact it's become a summer drunk fest for people to let their "hair" down so to speak. Alcohol is the #1 choice as this is the only "legal" drug you can get. Causes more deaths, fights, etc. but we accept that type of behavior as it is legal. "

ONLY MAKES GOOD SENSE wrote on Jun 4, 2008 9:56 AM:

" As a part time resident of Warrens now (Jellystone 12yrs), I can assure you that 90% of all offsale is not purchased in Warrens. Everyone that I know goes to Tomah on a regular basis to purchase everyday needs and that would include the alcohol. I am all for small town support but lets face it the "Mall" has a very limited selection and can not compete with the big box store in Tomah. Now for my point: Selling liquor at Cranberry Express would only make sense. You are not going to stop people from enjoying a drink while on there vacation or weekend retreat, and driving to warrens after they have is the alternative that some will choose. IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT!!!
Is Warrens looking for revenue from OWI's or offsale? Now for driving golf carts "DRUNK" My opinion is that driving anything drunk is against the law and they have to cross a village street to do that, so deal with it then, don't wait for them to get behind the wheel of there car and drive to the local store. It is not far to walk to Cranberry Express and I am sure for the most part people would if they had the fear of an OWI. "

Good Job Scott wrote on Jun 4, 2008 7:42 AM:

" Personally I miss the "Old Jellystone". Mr. V went too big too fast! It will all bite him in the butt someday. Mr. Edgerton was looking out for himself, wouldn't the rest of you do the same thing? Mr. V already took a lot of the "Malls" business away by putting in that gas station, was Mr. E suppose to sit there and let him take that part of his business too? It is no different then when Walmart opened in Tomah, all the little businesses in town closed. More power to you Scott...go get 'em. "

" Land of the fighting for rights, food, fuel, housing, JOBS. What about the people trying to take our rights away: environmentalist, big businesses and yes, animal rights activists too. The sad part is that the global warming people want to tax us on using the earth to the tune of $3,300/yr/family, animal activists want use to pay for animal sanctionaries and 501C to care for lame, useless animals. They want us all to be vegetarians. As we progress to be "politically correct", we have lost all common sense. "

re dumb move wrote on Jun 3, 2008 2:50 PM:

" Of course they are bringing their own beer in and they can. No one has every told them they couldn't. I would assume they buy it at their own home town so no revenue for the locals anyways. I don't feel Jellystone deserves to sell anything more when they can't even pay their sales tax, check out Wisconsin Circuit Courts for Ed Van der Molen. If you can't pay the government you don't deserve a permit to sell more. I am sure if their not paying sales tax there are many other bills that aren't being paid either. "

" Do we really think people aren't carrying in Beer now? Of course they are and where do they have to get it from? HUMMMMMM

Talk about the GOOD OLE BOY SYSTEM WORKING

Talk about protecting your own beer sales

THIS IS LOCAL GOVERNMENT CORRUPTION at the most obvious

HOW ABOUT TAKING ALL LICENSES AWAY FROM ANYONE IN WARRENS SELLING BEER??????? "

re not really a smart move wrote on Jun 3, 2008 11:14 AM:

" I am sure Mr V did have more money at one time but haven't seen Edgertons name in the small claims these days have you. I live in Warrens and the lies that Jellystone has told to get the Village to do whatever they want them to is not right. I am glad they denied them the license. A liquor license at their gas station is not going to pull them out of the hole they have dug for themselves but it could make or break the local people that own the Warrens Mall and The Bog. Granted the prices are higher but what store in a small community isn't. I am very thankful when I need something at 8 at night that they have it and I don't have to drive to Tomah. We will all be paying for the expansion at Jellystone for a long time whether the peole have to drive to Warrens to get their alcohol or not. "

Not really a smart move wrote on Jun 3, 2008 9:54 AM:

" I think it was poor argument about golf carts being driven to get beer !!! Do you not think people drive drunk to the Warrens Mall to get alcohol with both golf carts and Vehicles . The Warrens Mall knows how much it will lose if they are allowed to sell beer at the cranberry Express that is why they oppose it not because someone is driving drunk with a golf cart if you do not think that happens all ready you might want to pull your head out of the sand and take another look . The Warrens Mall has been taking advantage of campers at both Jellystone and McMullen park for a long time so my only hope is that Ed continues his fight for a license and close those GREEEDY Bas----- up !! It would serve them right !!!c
i have a feeling Mr Edgerton that Mr Vander Molen has a hell of alot more money than you and will get what he wants in due time . So in the mean time why do'nt yuo rethink your pricing strategy instead of screwing the customer be more customer focused!!!! "

Conspiracy wrote on Jun 2, 2008 11:33 PM:

" Conspiracy theory is all I will say.....small towns. Better people "drive" to Warren's and purchase alcohol when they run out. That way they can get a OWI. As far as the golf carts, if one is found with a person that is intoxicated the vehicle should be revolked and a warning to the FAMILY that next time they will be banned from the park...... "

it only makes sense wrote on Jun 1, 2008 8:58 PM:

" as a smart business owner in a restaurant & hospitality environment, it would only be freakin smart to sell some sort of alcohol, its about time he realizes he's missing out on all of the money he could be making.....at the restaurant too, finally last year they starting selling alcohol. the guests are going to drink on the property no matter what....it just makes sense.

if the family "enivronment" is a concern, section off the grounds to "drinking area" and "non drinking area"....like I said above, people are going to drink no matter what and for all of you posters that want to oppose this decision, get a clue, he knows he's missing out on a ton of money (yes, even Mr. Ed needs some cash flow). "

Poor Ed wrote on May 31, 2008 12:39 PM:

" HAHA! Finally Mr. Van der Molen didn't get his way about something. Why do they want a liquor license anyway? They've never sold alcohol on the grounds as they've wanted to be seen as a "family orientated" facility, why do they want to start now? "
