Moravec racks up top finishes at Nekoosa Invitational

Tomah High School track & field standout Melissa Moravec won two events at the May 2 Wisconsin Rapids Invitational and followed up with two more firsts at Thursday’s Nekoosa Invitational.

The Timberwolves finished third at Wisconsin Rapids and second at Nekoosa.

At Wisconsin Rapids, Moravec won the triple jump with a leap of 33 feet, 8 1/2 inches. She won the long jump with a distance of 16-9 3/4.

Moravec was also the leadoff runner in the 400-meter relay team that won first place over Wausau West by just .04 seconds. The winning time of Moravec, Amy Gasser, Tayler Westpfahl and Emily Haines was 52.41 seconds.

Tomah’s other first-place showing at Wisconsin Rapids came in the 800 relay. Westpfahl, Gasser, Abby Schoonover and Elizabeth Scheckel won the race in 1:53.88.

Team scores at Wisconsin Rapids: Stevens Point 793.5, Wausau West 774, Tomah 511, Wisconsin Rapids 459.5, Sauk Prairie 450.

At Nekoosa, Moravec won the long jump in 16-6 and captured the 100-meter dash in 12.96 seconds. Moravec once again paired with Gasser, Westpfahl and Haines to win the 400 relay. Their winning time was 51.37 seconds.

Team scores: Marshfield 139, Tomah 126.5, Neillsville 103.5, La Crescent 97.5, Nekoosa 83.5, Mosinee 63.5, Waupaca 48.5, Necedah 33.

Five boys win

The Tomah boys had five individual winners at Nekoosa and finished second.

The Timberwolves got a big effort in the high jump from freshman Alex Marten, who won the event by clearing 5-8. Another underclassman, sophomore Matt Ferry, won the triple jump with a mark of 41-9.

In the shot put, senior Tyler Butzler cracked the 50-foot barrier with a toss of 50-8. Auggie Moser won the pole vault by clearing 11-6, which was one foot better than his nearest competitor. In the 1600, Derek Storkel won by 27 seconds with a time of 4:25.37.

Tomah’s 800 relay also took first with a time of 1:34.2.

Team scores: Nekoosa Blue 186.5, Tomah 146, Mosinee 99, La Crescent 80, Necedah 70.5, Neillsville 64, Waupaca 46, Nekoosa White 5.

The Mississippi Valley Conference meet is is Tuesday at La Crosse Logan High School.
