The Tomah High School boys golf team finished fifth in a Mississippi Valley Conference Invitational on their home course at Hiawatha Golf Course on Monday.

Josh Kohnhorst led the Timberwolves with a 10-over par 81. Kohnhorst struggled a little on the front nine with a 43, coach Dennis Dunek said, before rebounding to shoot a 38 on the back nine.

“Part of the reason he struggled a little on the front nine is probably that we haven’t played it much this year,” Dunek said.

Junior David Pierce was two strokes back from Kohnhorst, shooting an 83. Junior Travis Blinkiewicz (86), sophomore Eric Johnson (89) and freshman Derek Moser (91) rounded out Tomah’s top five.

Sam Kube of Holmen took medalist honors with an even-par 71. Onalaska won the team title with a score of 295. Tomah finished with 339.

The Timberwolves returned to action on Tuesday at the Black River Falls Invitational at Skyline Golf Course in Black River Falls, finishing 8th in the 13-team field with a score of 351. Kohnhorst hit a six-over par 78, and for Dunek, that was his best performance of the season.

“He finally broke through with a 78,” Dunek said of Kohnhorst. “He could have shot better, too. He is peaking now, and this is the time to do it.”

Also scoring for the Timberwolves at Black River Falls were Johnson (89), Pierce (91) and Blinkiewicz (93). The Timberwolves will play in an invitational in Cadott on Saturday and an MVC match in La Crosse on Monday.
