Letter: McCain? He's conservative, alright

I am writing in response to a recent letter asserting that John McCain is not conservative enough. Well, maybe not for Rush Limbaugh and James Dobson.

But consider the following, most of which I have checked through primary sources:

1. 2007 League of Conservation Voters rating: zero.

2. Children's Defense Fund rating: worst in Senate.

3. Current stand on abortion: “I do not support Roe vs. Wade. It (abortion) should be banned.”

4. Pat Buchanan: McCain “...will make Cheney look like Gandhi.”

5. Republican Senator Thad Cochran: “The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He’s erratic. He’s hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me.”

6. Advice to people facing foreclosure: get a second job and skip your vacation (by the way, he is one of the wealthiest men in Congress. He and his wife are known to own at least eight homes).

7. Voted against recent legislation banning waterboarding and other forms of torture, which passed with some Republican support, then praised Bush for vetoing it.

8. Number of active or former lobbyists on campaign staff: 59, the most of any candidate. His campaign manager, deputy campaign manager, campaign co-chairman, and a host of others are “former” lobbyists, thoughtfully taking time off from their regular line of work to support their man.

I could go on, but will leave that to the Democrats, if there is anything left of them after they get done noisily shredding themselves into oblivion.

John Berry,
