Late goals thwart soccer squad

La Crosse Central scored late in regulation and late in overtime to thwart the Tomah High School girls soccer team.

Goals by Central in the 76th and 96th minutes handed Tomah a 2-1 setback at Fields For Kids in La Crosse Tuesday.

Tomah fell to 2-5-1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference and 5-8-1 overall.

Central’s Hannah Pollack scored off a free kick four minutes before the end of overtime to deliver the winning goal.

Kelsey Gnewikow scored a goal in the 44th minute to give Tomah a 1-0 lead. The lead lasted for 32 minutes until Marissa Tymeson tied the game with just four minutes left in regulation. It was just Central’s fifth shot of the game.

Tomah had more scoring opportunities. The Timberwolves sent 12 shots at Central senior goalkeeper Kielty Wintersteen, and she stopped 11 of them.

The Timberwolves, who are 0-4-1 in their last five matches, host Sparta Tuesday in a 7 p.m. contest at E.J. McKean Field and head to West Salem May 8. Their final regular-season home match is May 13 vs. Holmen.
