Golfers battle wind, wet grounds

Wednesday, the Tomah High School golf team dealt with the wind.

Saturday, it dealt with wet grounds.

But despite a week of less-than-ideal weather, coach Dennis Dunek’s squad still managed to play 36 holes worth of golf.

Tomah finished fifth out of seven teams at the second Mississippi Valley Conference meet of the season Wednesday at the Golf Club at Cedar Creek in Onalaska. The wind inflated the scores with three golfers soaring past the 100 mark.

The Timberwolves were led by Josh Kohnhorst who fired an 89. David Pierce was right behind at 90, followed by Scott Pierce at 93 and Travis Blinkiewicz at 95.

Onalaska beat Holmen by six strokes to win for the second straight match.

Mark Wittchow and Cody Ferguson both led the Hilltoppers by shooting 8-over-par 79s. Sparta’s Ethan Schmitz earned meet medalist honors with a 1-over 72.

Team scores: Onalaska 318, Holmen 324, Sparta 331, La Crosse Central 352, Tomah 367, La Crosse Aquinas 380, La Crosse Logan 415.

Saturday, the Timberwolves competed at the Singh Grewal Invitational and finished eighth out of 12 Division 1 teams.

Once again, Kohnhorst led a tightly packed group of Tomah golfers. He fired an 86. Scott Pierce scored an 88, followed by Johnson at 89 and David Pierce at 92.

Team scores in Division 1: Chippewa Falls 316, Middleton 320, Reedsburg 323, Winona 323, Holmen 324, Sparta 327, Baraboo 337, Tomah 355, Eau Claire North 356, Marshfield 358, La Crosse Central 360, La Crosse Logan 377.

Friday’s invitational at La Crosse Logan’s home course was postponed due to rain. No makeup date has been set.
