It was another lousy weekend for high school sports, but unlike the previous weekend, it wasn’t a total weather wipeout.

Roughly half of the Tomah High School sports schedule was played from Thursday to Saturday, including four girls soccer matches.

The unlucky sports were track & field, boys tennis and baseball. Rain and wet grounds on E.J. McKean Field forced the cancellation of the Earl Gatzke Invitational. While the meet itself was cancelled, it will be replaced with a pair of triangulars in Tomah. Wausau West and Wisconsin Dells will travel to Tomah Tuesday, while Holmen and Mauston are the visitors April 29.

Tomah girls track & field coach Bruce Luebke said there was too much standing water in the long jump and triple jump pits to conduct those events safely. There was also small puddle of standing water in the shot put circle.

“There was no way you jump with that much standing water,” Luebke said. “We didn’t want to risk any injury.”

Baseball, softball and boys tennis were the other weather casualties.

Tomah and Holmen played for nearly an hour before Thursday’s game was suspended with Tomah leading, 7-6, with two outs in the bottom of the second. No date for resuming the game had been set by Sunday afternoon.

The boys tennis team had two events -- a Thursday dual at Viroqua and an invitational at Stevens Point -- rained out.

Tomah managed to play its Thursday softball match at Holmen Thursday, but Friday’s softball match at Sparta was postponed to May 6. It’s the second time that the match was postponed.
