The Tomah High School girls basketball team forced some really good opponents to abandon their full-court press.
Much of that was due to the ballhandling skills of point guard Melissa Moravec.
Moravec, a 5-2 senior, was recognized by the Mississippi Valley Conference coaches with a place on the all-MVC second team. Tomah coach Larry Fritz said Moravec, a three-year letterwinner, was a critical member of a team that recovered from a six-game losing streak to go 5-5 over its final 10 games and defeat Sparta for only the second time in 10 seasons.
“She’s such a great leader and such a determined young lady,” Fritz said. “In the three years I coached her, she was a press breaker all by herself sometimes. When good teams pull off their press, that says a lot about your point guard. She should have been first team.”
Moravec also won the Tomah’s Leader of the Pack award as the team’s most valuable player.
Two other Tomah players -- seniors Sarah Shudlick and Laura Shong -- were recognized as honorable mention. Shudlick, a guard, and Shong, a forward, are both three-year letterwinners.
Senior Abby Schoonover was Tomah’s representative on the all-MVC sportsmanship team.
Conference champion La Crosse Logan put three players -- seniors Emily Betz and Danielle Jorgenson and sophomore Michelle Mueller -- on the first team. They were joined by Holmen senior Maria Mackey and Sparta junior Katie Flock.
Joining Moravec on the second team were Brittany Hougum, a Holmen senior; Courtney Athnos, a La Crosse Central senior; Katie Schill, a La Crosse Aquinas senior; and Hailee Sullivan, a Sparta junior.
The other honorable mention picks:
Holmen -- Hannah Galstad, senior; Lauren Hicke, senior.
Onalaska - Jenny Kessler, junior; Rachel Greene, junior.
Central - Anna Boteva, sophomore; Ashley Hammes, junior.
Aquinas - Haylea Halverson, junior.
Logan - Rita Rabb, junior; Taylor Johnson, sophomore.
Sparta - Ellyn Herrman, senior; Kelsey Anderson, senior.
Holmen - Kylee Siolka, sophomore.
Jorgenson was the player of the year, and Holmen’s Duane Vike was the coach of the year.
