The four-year-old kindergarten ad-hoc study committee held its first meeting Thursday at the Robert Kupper Learning Center.

Mary Ellen Justinger and Rick Murray were elected as co-chairs of the 15-person committee. Justinger is a member of the Tomah school Board, Murray is a committee member.

Superintendent Bob Fasbender said the first meeting was mainly devoted to distributing research, statistics and articles on how four-year-old kindergarten has been implemented other school districts.

The Tomah School Board has discussed the issue since October but is unlikely to implement a 4-year-old kindergarten in time for the 2008-09 school year. Tomah is now in the minority of districts that don’t offer 4-year-old kindergarten. Over 60 percent of Wisconsin’s districts offer the program, which became eligible for state aid in 1984.

The committee set its next two meetings for April 14 and April 30 at 6:30 p.m. in the school district office. A final report to the school board is expected sometime this summer.

" Mary and Rick:
It would be great if the 4K school got started and the school board chose a Montessori curriculum. The Sparta Lakeview Montessori Elementary started with just the 4k and now have expanded to 4K-3rd grade based on the excitement and results from the 4K Montessori curriculum. The principal at that school is happy to answer any questions you may have.

I plan to have kids soon and would love to have them in a Montessori school. I work at Fort McCoy and it seems many of the families choose to live in Sparta because of the Montessori school instead of Tomah.

" Is this the town that has Tomah High School? I just read an article on foxnews.com about a students landscape painting and he was given a 0 credit on it. Teachers need to quit using political motives in school. Teachers are always in favor of freedom of speeh unless the freedom of speech doesn't fit into the teachers political beliefs. Parents need to be involved to stop all the teacher organizations from imposing their beliefs on our children. This teacher and school board should be fired. The Satanic images in paintings and books are always referred to as freedom of speech. Why? Because a lot of teachers have those beliefs. Maybe these beliefs are the reason so many teachers get caught visiting bad websites, haveing sexual relations with students, and providing alcohol and drugs to students.
