Storkel, shot putters lead boys track to second place

Derek Storkel was a double winner in the distance races, and Tyler Butzler and Kyle Price powered a one-two finish in the shot put to lead the Tomah High School boys track & field team to second place out of nine teams at the Chippewa Falls Indoor Invitational Thursday. The meet was held in UW-Eau Claire’s McPhee Center.

Haleigh Flottmeyer won the 3200-meter run for the Tomah girls and led the Timberwolves to fourth.

Storkel picked up where he left off last fall, when he finished second at the WIAA state cross country meet. He won the 1600 by 14 seconds with a time of 4 minutes, 43.81 seconds, and dominated the 3200 with a time of 10:04.07, nearly 43 seconds better than the runner-up.

In the shot put, senior Tyler Butzler uncorked a throw of 48 feet, 8 1/2 inches to take first place. In the same event, the Timberwolves got a big boost from sophomore Kyle Price, who took second at 43-5 1/2.

Tomah’s other placewinners were:

Second - 800 relay, 1:40.46.

Third - 3200 relay, 9:32.80

Fourth - Rhett Monroe, 200, :24.97; Zach Johnson, 400, :55.28; Reed Griffin, 55 hurdles, :08.63; Matt Ferry, high jump, 5-8; Zurik Adler, pole vault, 11-6

Fifth - Monroe, 55, :07.04; Auggie Moser, pole vault, 11-0.

Sixth - 1600 relay, 3:55.10; Johnson, triple jump, 37-9 1/2.

Seventh - Johnson, long jump, 18-4 1/4.

Team scores: Arcadia 111.5, Tomah 99.5, Holmen 95.33, Marshfield 91.83, Eau Claire Memorial 64.33, La Crosse Logan 44, Chippewa Falls 35.5, Sparta 30, Eau Claire Regis 13.

Flottmeyer had a close race in the 3200 but pulled away from a pair of Marshfield pursuers to win in just under four seconds. Her time was 12:31.88. She also finished second in the 1600 with a time of 5:52.16.

Tomah’s other placewinners:

Third - 800 relay, 1:57.65, Melissa Moravec, long jump, 16-5.

Fourth - Samantha Hartshorn, high jump, 4-10; Libby Heisinger, shot put, 31-11.

Fifth - Moravec, 55, :07.92; Emily Haines, 200, :28.7; 3200 relay, 12:02.98; Abby Schoonover, high jump, 4-8; Angelia Larson, pole vault, 7-6; Moravec, triple jump, 32-3.

Sixth - Amy Gasser, 55, :07.92; 1600 relay, 5:07.6.

Team scores: Holmen 118.66., Arcadia 89, Marshfield 82.33, Tomah 73, Eau Claire Regis 66, La Crosse Logan 60, Chippewa Falls 39.5, Sparta 36.5, Eau Claire Memorial 16.

The first outdoor meet is the Mississippi Valley Conference/Coulee Conference Invitational April 8 at Holmen.
