Zahrte, Schultz MVC boys honorable mention

Two players who led Tomah to a significantly more competitive boys basketball season were recognized by the Mississippi Valley Conference coaches.

Senior Lane Zahrte and sophomore Brandon Schultz were honorable mention picks on the all-MVC squad.

Zahrte was Tomah’s leading scorer and leading 3-point shooter. A 3-year letterwinner, Zahrte also assumed much of the ballhandling duties when starting point guard Trevor Ludeking began the season on the disabled list.

Schultz started all 21 games for Tomah and was the Timberwolves’ most consistent inside scoring threat. He scored a personal-high 20 points in Tomah’s finale at Madison LaFollette in the first round of the WIAA Division 1 regional tournament.

Zahrte and Schultz led Tomah to a 6-15 overall record (4-8 in the MVC) just one year after the team went 0-21.

Conference champion La Crosse nabbed three of the five first-team slots. Logan’s first teamers were senior Dylan Pedretti and Tony Mueller and freshman Trevor Jorgenson. They were joined on the first team by La Crosse Central senior Tyler Shaker and La Crosse Aquinas junior Jimmy Whitehead.

All five members of the second team were seniors. They were Lucas Morrissey and Zach Rickaway of Aquinas, Jesse Tiedt of Holmen, Quincy Blackwell of Logan and Kyle Stewart of Onalaska.

The remaining honorable mention picks were:

* Onalaska - Mike Price, junior; Tyler Adams, sophomore.

* Central - Martin Moe, senior; Bobby Juan, sophomore.

* Sparta - Jordan Laufenberg, sophomore; Kevin Rasmussen, sophomore.

* Holmen - Sam Kube, senior; Tom Bergman, senior.

* Aquinas - Sam Pederson, senior; Michael Hanson, senior.

8 Logan - Adam Kleman, senior; Jake Whitewater, senior.

Pedretti was the player of the year, and Logan’s Jeff Axness was the coach of the year.
