Published - Wednesday, March 26, 2008 Man convicted of incest sentenced to prison A former Sparta man was sentenced in Monroe County Court on Tuesday for a conviction of incest. Monroe County District Attorney Dan Cary announced that Nick J. Warthan, 41, was sentenced by Judge Todd L. Ziegler to 20 years of initial confinement in the Wisconsin State Prison system, followed by 10 years of extended supervision, for a total sentence of 30 years. Warthan was convicted on Jan. 30. He had previously been convicted of sexual assault in 1992 and 1999, according to Cary. “In this case, a Monroe County jury found the defendant guilty of having sexual intercourse with a 16 year old victim, who was related to him by blood,” Cary said. “Sadly, this is not the first time the defendant has been convicted of a sex offense.” Cary also said that the substantial amount of prison time imposed by Judge Ziegler accurately reflects the severity of the defendant’s crime and sends a message to the community that the defendant’s conduct will not be tollerated.
