The Tomah Police Department was called to the Holiday Inn on Sunday where a child had nearly drowned and was not responding. Officers arrived on the scene and were assisted by the Tomah Area Ambulance Service in administering medical treatment to the child.

During the investigation, officers learned that an adult caretaker of the child had left the child unattended in the pool area. The child was located unconscious in the pool. The child was removed from the pool and CPR was administered, according to the Tomah Police Department. The child regained consciousness and was transported to Tomah Memorial Hospital.

The case is under investigation and no arrests have been made at this time. After the investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office for review of possible charges.

" the 9 and 10 year old kids held his legs and MADE HIM DROWN!! Not that it was their fault because THEIR mom was across town (supposedly). NOR did she ask the other people who were busy with their own birthday party going on!!! No responsibility for it??? It's outragous is what it is!!! Then for people to talk about whether or not he is Native American, unbelieveable.....get your facts STRAIGHT before commenting on ones heritage. "

" Still no charges brought against this woman even when she admits to leaving them unsupervised. It has been almost a month and nothing has been done. A follow up on the child would be nice to know how he is doing and if he is "normal".......and whether or not charges are pending....people want to know her name and should. "

" How sad for you....he may be part Native American but that has nothing to do with anything. He is also many other things but most importantly an inoccent child. I am appauled you would make such a comment without all the facts. And judging on whether or not he is Ho-chunk or whether or not people should donate, you should feel ashamed of yourself. I pity you AND your kids...... "

" Ya, if the kid is a Ho-Chunk then why rise money for him they can get help from the hochuck. rise money for kids that need it that are getting abused, and things like that like mine kid is. or help the people in the house fire. if your not a hochuck in this town or a rich, your nothing in this town. "

" It is so sad to read about your nephew and I'm glad to hear he is okay. My brother-in-law is also Native American and I have learned much from him about Native ways including kinship. He is a Ho-Chunk Tribal member.I don't know if this will apply to you and your family, but the tribe takes very good care of the tribal members. They have programs to help, including a medical program much like Badger care. There are also programs to help with transportation or other emergency issues. Maybe they offer something that would help your family from suffering financially as well as emotionally. I know they also offer counseling services. Again, I am so happy to hear SOMEONE was watching over little Haven! "

" As for the house fire victim, may God be with his family, and if help is needed people will be there for the family. As for helping Haven's family, this was pure negligence on the adult's part and she should have to pay. Yet, until it is determined her fault, the family needs help and I know there are generous souls out there, including myself, that will give what we can to help.

May Haven have a full & normal life. "

" That is so stupid. i have an 8 year old brother who is friends with Haven and my brother is prety upset about it . How could you leave kids in a pool by them selfs you have to watch them carefully so they dont get hurt you have to be an idiot to leave kids there by them selfs!!!!!

" My daughter drown and was brought back at the same age as this child. We started noticing problems in school, poor concentration and memory issues as well as problems breathing and pains in chest. She is now doing much better after many trips to a foot therapist who does zone therapy on her. She is now back on top of life and an honor roll student. Please check out your options if you notice changes in him. At first we didn't notice any change right away but then as time went on it was like someone had changed out our little girl with someone else, mood swings, depression... just keep a close eye on him and God bless your family. You were given a miracle, don't ever overlook that. As hard as it may be to understand why this happened, just be thankful that he is still here with you! "

" I'm sorry you are having problems financially, however; this situation is much different than your situation. This little guy didn't deserve to have this happen to him, he is an innocent victim and the medical bills are astronomical for saving his life, something that was all caused by negligence of the adult caregiver, no one else. "

" This child is our nephew and we KNOW his parents would have never left him alone in that pool. Something needs to be done about this. We are all the way in Japan and got so sick when we heard about it. Wish we could have been there!!!
Thank for all of you who helped save Haven, God bless you all!!!! "

" Before you judge be aware that the parents of this young boy would never have allowed him to be with his friends if they would have known the adult that was supposed to be supervising was not even close to the pool area. Hotel pools have their pool areas clearly marked with signs that say that no lifeguards are on duty and that children are supposed to be closely supervised by adults. The young boy did not nearly drown, he drowned! He needed to be resuscitated because he had no pulse and was not breathing! Thank the Lord the young boy was found when he was. Thank the Lord someone knew CPR. And thank the Lord he was able to be brought back. "

" There is a fund set up at Tomah's Farmers and Merchants bank to help with medical costs for this little guy. Donations can be made at any of the banks locations. It is called the Help "Haven" account. "

" The child shouldn't been left alone. How dumb can you be if the child is 7 or not. it's your respanceabtly to watch that kid. not in water or not. And they don't do anything about that. but if a person says that your hitting your kid and your didn't touch your kids then they will do something about that. but something should of been done right away, "

" To Dawn; he is only 7. It was an adult who was supposed to be supervising them. Her son was there too, it could have been him. "

Dawn wrote on Mar 19, 2008 12:05 PM:

" Does anyone know how old this child was?

I am glad he is alright, but you can NEVER NEVER leave a pool area when small kids are in there just totally irreponsible..It was said it was not the parents who were there I am wondering how old was this caretaker a teenager or older? why did they go away from the pool? What was so important that they left a child alone? "

Grandma wrote on Mar 19, 2008 7:31 AM:

" Near drown?? He was clinically dead....flat lined. Thank you to everyone who saved our precious grandson!!! Timing was what made the difference and we are so thankful to the person who started the CPR, God bless you. Also thanks to the TPD and Ambulance Service for there assistance, as well as TMH. We are so thankful that you all brought back our grandson. I had never felt so ill in my life when I got the news. I am still confused as to why an adult would leave young children in the pool area alone, and NO it wasn't his parents. They never would have allowed him to go had they thought for one minute they wouldn't be supervised. "

Take Charge wrote on Mar 18, 2008 10:23 PM:

" It's the parent's or caretaker's responsibility. It's about time people quit expecting others to take care of their off-spring. How many times have you been in a restaurant with naughty children running around being a menace to the waitstaff and other customers? How many times do you walk through a store to have unattended children runnning around and causing havoc? I'm a parent, but I raised my kids to be respectful and mindful. Kids may be kids, but discipline is done for a child, not to a child. Management should not put up with it. Customers should not put up with it -- the mis-behavior costs all of us money. Parents need to be reminded to be parents. No excuses. Take Charge! "

J.J. wrote on Mar 18, 2008 4:14 PM:

" This is ridiculous!!! These sorts of stories make me sick! This should not happen! I'm glad that the child was ok, it could have been much worse. As for the caretaker..you should be slapped!!! IDIOT!!
Does the Holiday Inn even have lifeguards yet? I think any hotel with a pool facility should have one on duty, even if its just an employee with CPR or lifeguarding skills making rounds thru the pool area, anything is better than nothing. I'm not saying that would give a caretaker an excuse to leave a child unattened, that would be just dumb. At least there would be someone there to give immediate care in the case of an accident, and not have to wait for police or the ambulance. Lives could be saved that way, every second counts!
I worked as a lifeguard at Jellystone and Cranberry Lodge and all I have to say, is people keep an eye on your kids!! Lifeguards are there to keep things safe, not babysit for you. Look at some of the drownings that have happend in the Dells with many lifeguards on duty, they were a result of people not watching their kids! "
