Coach Tim Gnewikow’s Tomah High School boys varsity reserve basketball team finished its season with a 6-14 record after losing to Sparta, 61-46, Feb. 15, at Sparta High School.

Tomah finished the season with a three-game a losing streak. The Timberwolves were also defeated by Holmen, 67-34, and La Crosse Logan, 52-33. They finished the Mississippi Valley Conference season at 2-10.

Tomah’s final win of the season was a come-from-behind 38-29 triumph at Adams-Friendship Feb. 7. The Timberwolves trailed, 22-18, at intermission but held the Green Devils to just one point in the fourth quarter.

Kyle Price and Alex Marten shared high-scoring honors for Tomah with nine points each.

At Holmen, Tomah’s defense yielded six three-point baskets and gave up 37 points after halftime. Phil Deming led the Timberwolves with nine points.

Deming scored nine points in the fourth quarter at Logan, but the Rangers countered by making eight of 12 foul shots in the final period. Deming finished with 18 points, which included two 3-point baskets.

Marten produced a season-high 18 points against Sparta, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Spartans’ fast start. Sparta zoomed out to an 18-6 lead after the first quarter and were never threatened after that. The Spartans made 17 of 29 foul shots. None of the Spartans’ 22 field goals were from beyond the 3-point arc.

Tomah was 11 of 16 from the stripe. Eric Johnson scored seven points and was five of six from the line.

Deming finished the season as the team’s leading scorer with 10.5 points per game and reached double figures in 10 contest.

Price averaged 6.6 points and reached double figures five times. Marten, a freshman who was promoted to the varsity reserve for the final 15 games, averaged 6.2 points.

" If Dandy did take the G, there is only one individual in the country with the credentials to officiate the game... Chief Decorah is the only one I know capable of officiating such a high profile matchup in the great game of folly! The game would have to be played at the fair grounds where the tractor pull is held. It is the only place large enough to seat the type of crowd that would be expected for such an event. "

" LOL, Tim Gnewikow is actually a varsity reserve level coach? What has Tomah athletics come to when you can get a job with no credentials at all. "

" I don't even know what this folly is that all these here people keep talking about, but i do know this. Coach G more than likely is at best an average player. Even though I've never strapped on the folly pads, I am confident I could score more points or get more goals or beat more bludgers than him. Now, of course I am in the belief that this folly is some type of sport, in which case I am sure I would dominate. However, it is something different, like a dancing competition, then I'm sure Coach G would win that. "

" What is with everyone bashing the tomah coaches?? They put in a lot of extra time and effort toward becoming the best folly players they can be. I know coach G is sick of being picked last, so he put a lot of time in the weight room this summer, He went to the NFPA (National Folly Players of America)selects camp this summer, and also got some instruction from "Scratches O'Houlian" (Patches O'Houlian's brother)on a one on one basis. He is a young guy with all the tools to make it as a folly player in this town, so please leave him alone. "

re: COACH "G" IS GOOD? wrote on Mar 19, 2008 9:53 PM:

" I beg to differ. I have had my days with Coach G in a game of Folly or two and he has written the book on strategy in this game. His kicking abilities are 2nd to none and when it comes to defense, he is a wall, a brick wall. I put in a letter to the school board to get a Tomah High School Folly Team and he WILL be head coach.
No doubt about it. "

COACH "G" IS GOOD? wrote on Mar 18, 2008 6:10 PM:

" First off, Coach G is average at folly at best. Someone who continues to take a beating in the midsection while playing this great game deserves more credit. Because of Coach G's physical presence, he continues to be the last one picked everytime. We can only hope that the administration brings in a coach from outside the area to continue to put the best folly team on the field. "
