Published - Tuesday, March 18, 2008 Brieske resigns as boys basketball coach Jeff Brieske has resigned as Tomah High School boys basketball coach. The Tomah School Board will act on Brieske’s resignation when it meets Thursday at LaGrange Elementary School. Superintendent Bob Fasbender confirmed Friday that Brieske has submitted a resignation letter but said it couldn’t be released to the public until the board accepts it. Brieske didn’t return a Tomah Journal phone call by press time. In five seasons as head coach, Brieske compiled a 34-73 overall record and 19-41 Mississippi Valley Conference mark. Brieske experienced a marked swing of highs and lows as head coach. In 2005, he led Tomah to its first-ever MVC boys basketball championship since joining the league in 1989. It was Tomah’s first conference championship since winning the South Central Conference in 1975. Two years later after winning the MVC crown, Tomah suffered through a 0-21 season. Last year, Tomah finished 6-15 after losing a first-round WIAA Division 1 regional tournament game at Madison La Follette Feb. 19. The young team had three sophomores on the roster and will bring back most of its starting lineup next season. Brieske is a 1995 graduate of Tomah High School and played on the 1994 Tomah team coached by Doug Russell that reached the state basketball tournament. Brieske was an assistant coach under Russell before Russell resigned after the 2002-03 season. Brieske’s father, Ron Brieske, coaches the girls softball team.
