Published - Wednesday, March 12, 2008 School Board ad hoc committee will study 4-year-old kindergarten The Tomah School Board approved the formation of an Ad-Hoc Committee to study the implementation of four-year old kindergarten at its meeting at Lemonweir Elementary School on Thursday. Board member Mary Ellen Justinger told the board that she has seen surveys and been to meetings on the subject of four-year old kindergarten, and while much of what she has heard is positive, she feels that there are also many questions that need to be addressed. “There is enthusiasm, and there is concern,” Justinger said. “When we talk about four-year old kindergarten, we should be talking about it from an educated viewpoint.” The Board plans to put a committee together quickly to research issues surrounding four-year old kindergarten, as well as hear public concerns. They also plan for the committee to be made up of a diverse group of involved and affected people. “We are looking at a very diverse committee,” Justinger said. “There is a lot of research out there, and we really need to look at it thoroughly.” The committee will consist of 14 members. Two members of the School Board will sit on the committee. Other committee members will consist of seven members appointed by the School Board and five at-large members. The School Board will take applications until March 10 for appointee positions, and March 15 for at-large positions.
