The Veterans Administration hospital in Tomah will start work sooner than planned on a project to relocate its psychiatric ward thanks to a federal boost in VA funding.
The Tomah VA will get $4.425 million to renovate one of its buildings to accommodate a 25-bed psychiatric care unit currently housed in a remote building.
The remodeled building will provide a more home-like environment and better privacy for patients, said Laura Bishop, spokeswoman for the VA. It is expected to be finished in October 2009.
The Department of Veterans Affairs had approved the project for funding through an internal capital improvements process, but according to a news release from Rep. Ron Kind, D-La Crosse, the timeline was accelerated because Congress voted to give the Veterans Administration an extra $3.8 billion over the record $87 billion that President Bush had requested for 2008.
The additional funding allowed the VA to double its budget for minor construction projects, said Kind spokeswoman Anne Lupardus.
