The Tomah School Board will consider whether to establish a committee to study the creation of a four-year-old kindergarten. Board members will vote on the proposal when they meet Thursday, 7:30 p.m., at Lemonweir Elementary School.
Board members have ruled out establishing a four-year-old kindergarten in time for the 2008-09 school year but kept the issue on its long-term agenda.
Most Wisconsin school districts have already established four-year-old kindergartens, and 22 districts launched four-year-old kindergartens in 2007-08 alone. By next fall, Tomah, Black River Falls and Bangor will be the only three school districts in the area without the program, and board members have expressed concerns that Tomah loses four-year-olds to other districts through open enrollment.
Other agenda items include:
*Review of parent-teacher conference schedule for 2008-09.
*Request to create an arts advisor position.
*Request for an additional elementary musical director.
*Kindergarten registration update.
*January enrollment report.
*Report from the school-based police officer.
*Board polices on vending machines and innovative programs.
*Resignations/approval of contracts.
The Finance Committee will meet at 6:45 p.m., followed by the Personnel Committee at 7:15 p.m.
