The Tomah High School Show Choir has a new interim director. Morgan Haggerty has been hired to oversee the THS Limited Edition, replacing first year show choir director Susan Glenna, who resigned Dec. 6.

THS Principal Marlon Mee said Haggerty has been hired as the interim director until the position is officially filled per school district policy.

“Morgan has stepped in as our interim director until the position is officially filled,” Mee explained. “She has a wealth of show choir knowledge, and we are excited to have her working with our show choir,” Mee said. “Her enthusiasm has carried over to the choir members.”

Mee expects the position to be posted and filled permanently before the group's first competition on Jan. 12.

Haggerty graduated from Viterbo University in LaCrosse on December 15, with a degree in Music Education. She was a member of the Onalaska Hilltopper Show Choir for three years, the Viterbo University's Platinum Edition in LaCrosse for three years, and the assistant director for Central Connection.

Tomah Show Choir alumni Megan Stoczynski and Megan Tiber are sharing the duties of assistant director.

Haggerty said the group is busy preparing for the upcoming show choir competition season which kicks off with the Onalaska Show Choir Invitational in Onalaska, Jan. 12.

“After working with the members in Limited Edition, I am very optimistic about the show. The students are willing to work hard to pull this show together and I feel we have made some huge strides in the last couple of weeks”, Haggerty said.

Limited Edition is also scheduled to perform at the Logan Show Choir Invitational in LaCrosse Feb. 9, and the Holmen Show Choir Invitational on March 1.

Last fall the Renegades of Rhythm joined with the Limited Edition to form the new 51 member Limited Edition.

" all i have to say about this show choir thing is that none of you relize what a good thing you had about three and four years ago. mr staflien was a great teacher and director, who if were treated better, would have never left tomah at least not for a while. and then when you did get something great in ms gulsvig, you chased her away to. i think all of the parents and other adm should let whomever is the next director do things at his/her own pace and own way. do all that you can to help without being a royal pain in the . this would probaly be the best thing that could happen for this program. "

" You sound like a disgruntled parent/teacher. You have not been happy for 3 yrs? What are looking for? If you are a grunt it is up to you to say "no". No one is forced to be a volunteer. Could you do your job if the pressure you have applied to Mrs. Glenna was applied to you? Bet not. You would be whining in Adm. ear like you have been for no reason. YOU have put the kids thru whatever you think they have been thru. Sounds like a little disapline and accountability would go a long way with the "mistreated" kids. Why don't YOU lay out the rules for the next director. Then they will know what to do from the get-go. YOU did not allow Mrs. G to be productive at all. YOU have been on her from day one. The MAJORITY of the school should wake up and see what is going on around you. It is time to care and get involved in this school. Mrs. G quit because she was warned that the Dec. 6 show choir meeting was going to be as unpleasant as the first. Nothing productive there. If you were not willing to work with her by then, I guess she may have thought you are a hopeless case. I heard thru the "grapevine" that all of her solo-ensemble students are going to state. Nuff said. "

" You sound like a disgruntled parent/teacher? You haven't been happy for 3 years? What are you looking for? I know this years teacher very well, and all you have done is make her head spin from day one. You have not helped or let her have one productive day. Could you do your job under the pressure you put her under? Whatever you think she is today, you have created this. And why did she resign? Because she was warned she would be under attack at the Dec.6 meeting just as she was at the first meeting. you want to treat someone like this and expect positive results? She does not want to leave Tomah, but she will be glad to be rid of the likes of you and yours. She is the victim, not you, not the kids by her hand. Yours!! Some of you should wake up and smell the coffee, and realize what is going on right in front of you. And, NO this is not written by Mrs. Glenna, and not at her request. "

RE; Why did she resign? wrote on Mar 20, 2008 12:48 PM:

" She was attacked verbally, and insulted at the first show choir meeting. And warned from someone "in the know' That is what was in store for Dec. 6 meeting. She resigned on the spot. What would have done? She has been dogged about it ever since even though she has nothing to do with it. How is she suppose to be on top of things and have her head on straight when she has been mistreated from day one. She is not the one who has messed up here. "

Work it out wrote on Mar 20, 2008 12:34 PM:

" With all due respect to anyone involved, I think you should ALL try and work this out. It is not fair to the kids, that they have a new teacher EVERY year. 5 in 5 yrs. is a bit much. No wonder they are swimming upstream. So is the teacher. You have a music teacher who loves the kids and the school, but she too, needs some respect from some of you. She never lied about her show choir experience, so maybe a little compassion would not hurt. Do you care how much some of you have hurt her? You do have a beautiful school, but as they say, beauty is superficial. Work together, not against each other. "

" Smile and look like you are having fun? How lame is that? Who would tell you such a thing? Are you familiar with the saying "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink"? "

Why she quit wrote on Mar 19, 2008 6:59 PM:

" Do you have a clue, the mess Mrs. Glenna was handed when she took the music job? After how many teachers and changes, she is the one to have the magic wand? She received NOTHING, no cooperation from the start. She was to be a mind reader. When she resigned from being ridiculed in public by another employee in front of Adm. (saying nothing gives approval).Poof, the magic wand, and another employee appears. What a wonderful show "choir" you could have had with the 2 of them working together. You will get a new choir director, but you will not get the talent Mrs. Glenna has. It comes from God, not a sheet of music. She could not handle 2 show choirs, 3 choirs, lessons and all that goes with it. Plus countless bitching e-mails daily.Parents should not have access to teachers e-mail. It is cowardly. Come face to face. Most of you want the glory and not the work. She also has many supporters. Good Luck. "

CONGRATULATIONS wrote on Mar 2, 2008 3:48 PM:

" Way to go THS show choir for making it to the finals at Holmen Competition this weekend! You have worked so hard and have had to spend so much time swimming upstream. What a wonderful way to end the competition season. Each member should be commended for their dedication and hard work - it really paid off. Just goes to show that a group (and it's director) is only as strong as it's member's commitment. Congratulations for those that stayed committed through good times and bad. You truly are amazing individuals! "

Show Choir Student wrote on Feb 11, 2008 2:56 PM:

" The Show Choir did well at the competition on Saturday. There is always something to improve apon, but that is how everything is. I'm just glad to know that even though there are some rough feelings between each other that we can have some fun out of it. I just hope that we can continue to get more fun out of it before the last competition. We've been told to smile and "look like we are having fun." But, shouldn't we be "actually" having fun not just "looking" like we are having fun. Sure on preformance day we smile and we DO have fun. But, imagine what the show would be like if everyday we went to Show Choir and looked forward to having fun and then the excitment doubles when we have to preform. "

"outside" opinion wrote on Feb 6, 2008 7:35 PM:

" I may not be affiliated with the show choir program right now, but I have thoroughly enjoyed watching it over the years - through ALL the directors: Dale Stafslien, Ilene Quartermont,Jennifer Gulsvig, Matt Jorgenson and YES, Susan Glena. All have made their own marks BOTH positive and negative.

Maybe the best thing for the choral program in Tomah is to eliminate show choir all together for a short time. Allow for a "regrouping" and a deep breath to look at what is really important. What is best for our kids? Is it the way things are now - angry people fighting about where they place in competition each year? I hope not! I would hope we want a place for our kids to have a POSITIVE performance experience and a way to work as a team and express themselves and their many talents.

Time for a REAL change! "

" I, myself, find it hilarious that none of you parents felt qualified enough to apply for the show choir interim position when it was open, nor did you feel qualified enough to apply for the choir director position when it's been open the last 2 years in a row, yet you feel qualified enough to piss and moan about the job that that person is doing.

only a handful of people applied for the tomah position this last time because they know the reputation of the parent organization. I know because I've talked to many music teachers in the area who were not even considering applying. It wasn't because they thought the position was hard, or because they didn't want to teach an extra-curricular position - but because they didn't want to deal with the parents who have a horrible reputation.

You're doing a fine job, parents. Keep up the good work. "

" Funny...Tomah took DEAD LAST in the Onalaska competition. Last year they were in the middle of the pack...

I suppose you want a director who's a puppet for you. That's fine. But no one will want to teach in Tomah after knowing the reputation of the group of parents who "lead" the parent organization. And to "show choir fan 2", I see that you have also coached a varsity sport and directed choir and show choir. Hypocrites. IT's a wonder you have any show choir program left at all. "

I know all too well... wrote on Jan 22, 2008 10:19 AM:

" Yes, parents do have a right to express their opinions, and those opinions were always heard when propperly expressed. However, expressing your opinion does not always equal getting your way. It is impossible to please everyone. The saddest element to "show choir fan 2" is that this inhibits the THS students from realizing their potential. It creates disention and interferes with the team element to sports and music. There are some fantastic kids at THS, but all people can talk about is how unhappy they are with this coach or that teacher or the show choir director. Until the parents in Tomah let the coaches coach, the teachers teach, and the directors direct, success will evade Tomah High School. That is so sad, because the students deserve better. "

" Settle down. Wow. You probably have a kid who got cut from a sport and whines about his video games not working. Either that or s/he is on the team but doesn't play because s/he sucks. Settle down and pay your money and yes, keep your opinions to yourself, unless you want to coach...
HA! You're right, that would mean you would have to DO SOMETHING BESIDES COMPLAIN LIKE EVERYONE IN TOMAH DOES! "

" I would like to thank the showchoir parents for all you do for us, you go to the meetings and have great ideas and are willing to do whatever is asked of you to support this group. just the hours at cranfest are awsome but you keep on supporting in so many ways. Parents thank you for always being there you are awsome "

" In respons to Re:why
You must be quite the busy person with the experience of having Coached Varsity sports and Show Choir that makes you qualified to make that type of comment. I am amazed at your comment about the "helicopter parents hovering about."
This is the typical response I would expect from a teacher. As if when she was hired she didn't know the pay scale or the hours it would take to be the Show Choir director.
Parents are always wanted to be there as long as their doing the grunt work or raising the money for different programs.(Send your money but keep your opinions to yourself.)
When people are expected to be accountable for their actions they are appalled that anyone would have the audacity to question anything being done. As a parent who has seen the B.S. from Varsity coaches and the Show Choir directors over the last 3 years I will only say that if you have children who are going to go through THS. You too are at sometine going to be surprised with the behavior of some of our so called professionals.
As always the kids always have to be held accountable. Teachers, rarely. "

" Directing show choir is about as miserable a job as coaching a varsity sport. Tons of hours for very little pay, and all the heat you can take from helicopter parents hovering over every move you do and do not make. "
