Tomah police were led on a high-speed chase Dec. 20, resulting in damage to two vehicles, including a police squad car.
David C. Odden, who was identified from a North Dakota drivers license, is accused of eluding police after Tomah police officer Dustin Walters clocked him speeding in a red Pontiac traveling northbound on N. Glendale Avenue in the early morning hours with no front license plate.
According to the report, Odden initially refused to stop when Walters turned his squad car lights on, and sped up to 50 miles per hour in a 25 m.p.h. zone when Walters turned his siren on continuously.
As they approached E. Veterans Street, Odden slowed to turn right and failed to stop at a stop sign. Odden then sped up at an extreme rate, and after nearly another half-mile, Walters collided with a deer and was unable to continue pursuit.
According to Walters, officer Eric Pedersen was right behind him, and was able to continue pursuit until Odden crashed at the intersection of County Highway ET and Formica Road. The suspect then fled into a field where he was apprehended. The total pursuit lasted 2.6 miles, reaching speeds of 85-95 m.p.h.
Walters, who remained at the scene where his squad car collided with a deer, was picked up by a Wisconsin State Trooper and escorted to the scene of the arrest. According to Walters, marijuana was found in Odden’s possession, and a wooden “dugout” was found in his left pocket containing a ‘small leafy substance’ that resembled marijuana.
Odden was brought by ambulance to Tomah Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and made aware of his citations by Walters.
Odden was transported to the Monroe County Jail, where he was charged with knowingly fleeing an officer and a second offense of possession of marijuana, which are both felonies. He was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
